Amber Alert canceled after 13-month-old found safe

A tipster's call Friday morning resolved an Amber Alert, reunited a 13-month-old boy with his mother and left his alleged kidnapper behind bars.

Police say Nathaniel Gonzalez grabbed little Kharim Moreira from an apartment at 46th and Stockwell streets about 9 a.m. Friday, speeding away in a relative's 2007 Chevy Aveo.

Gonzalez had been visiting Kharim and his mother, who is Gonzalez's cousin, when he started making "delusional statements, indicating that he felt Kharim was his son," police said in a news release.

"Suddenly, (he) grabbed the child and ran from the apartment," the release said. "Kharim's mother gave chase, screaming for help. Neighbors tried to stop him, but were not successful."

A police search followed, aided by a Nebraska State Patrol helicopter. Then came a request for the public's help. An Amber Alert.

About 11 a.m., someone spotted the Aveo in the Target parking lot at 48th and R streets and called the city's 911 center.

Officers swarmed the parking lot. One flattened the Aveo's tires.

Police found the pair inside near the front of the store, the baby unharmed, and arrested Gonzalez on suspicion of kidnapping and felony theft for taking the car, Officer Katie Flood said.

"The child is safe and OK and probably being reunited with his mother as we speak," Lincoln Police Sgt. Don Scheinost said at the scene.
