Authorities say the six people shot dead in a South Carolina home after a man called police and said he was thinking about hurting himself were involved in a domestic dispute.

Greenwood County Sheriff Tony Davis identified the man who fired the shots – and ended the shooting spree with his own suicide -- as 27-year-old Bryan Sweatt. Davis says Sweatt had dated one of the women who was killed and had a child with her.

Davis says the victims found inside the Greenwood home on Tuesday included the woman, her parents and two children. He identified them at a press conference Wednesday as Richard Allen Fields, 51, Melissa Maroney Fields, 49, Chandra Marie Fields, 26, Tariq Kenyon Robinson, 11, and William Asa Robinson, 9, FoxCarolina.com reports.

The sheriff says the shootings looked like executions and that Sweatt used a "large caliber handgun."
Davis says Sweatt and the woman were in a custody dispute about their infant child. Davis believes Sweatt broke into the home and was waiting for the victims to come back.

"I've been in law enforcement in Greenwood since 1975, and to my knowledge, this is the first that I responded to with this many deceased," Davis told FoxCarolina.com.

Officers first went to the home in Greenwood County after receiving a call from a man who said he was thinking about hurting himself, Greenwood County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Long said. He said while police were on their way, one of the man's neighbors called 911 saying two children from that address had arrived at her house and told her a shot had been fired. He said the children remained at her house.

After about an hour and "several unsuccessful attempts" by officers to make contact with anyone in the home, the SWAT team entered and discovered the bodies, Long said.

Davis said Sweatt was scheduled to be in court on the day of the shooting but failed to appear, according to FoxCarolina.com. Sweatt was arrested for burglary in 2013.

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Just days before Halloween, a man killed five people and then himself inside a home in Greenwood.

Neighbors say Chandra Fields and her family, including her infant daughter, were happy.

"They seemed just like a happy family to me," said Rosetta Jennings. "The other day I passed by and saw the gentleman going to the mailbox and he waved."

But on the evening of October 29th, 911 operators in the area received a call from a neighbor who was shaken by what she was told was happening next door.

"I just got 4 kids at my door that say somebody just killed their mama locked in this house," the neighbor told dispatchers. "There are two other children in the house. Asa is 6, 9. He's so small. And Tariq is 11."

About that same time another call was placed,  from inside the fields home.  It was Bryan Sweatt, Chandra's estranged boyfriend. Investigators think he broke in and waited for the Fields family to get home.

"I need an officer on Callison Highway," Sweatt told the 911 dispatcher. "I'm just stressed out and about to take my life."

Soon after that call police discovered the bodies of Sweatt, Fields, her parents and her two nephews, aged 9 and 11.

"It is my understanding that was part of the problem, was custody, a lack of having access to the child, seven month old girl," said Greenwood County Sheriff Tony Davis.

The child survived. She was taken next door by one of the children who showed up at the neighbor's door.

Sweatt was out on bond for burglary charges at the time of the murder-suicide and that has state lawmakers now working to pass tougher legislation.

"If you're out on bond, which you have a right to be out on bond while you're awaiting trial, if you continue to commit violent offences and you continue to get convicted, then you're looking at serious time," said Sumter Senator Thomas McEleveen.

The 2014 Legislative session begins January 14th.
