5-year-old Omaha girl shot dead by stray bullet as she ate breakfast Wednesday morning
Payton Benson was killed when three callous gunman peppered her street with 20 bullets. A stray shot felled the girl as she sat eating her breakfast. She was the Nebraska city's first homicide victim of 2014.

A 5-year-old Omaha girl was gunned down as she ate breakfast inside her home Wednesday - felled by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting.
Cops responded to reports of a hail of gunfire near 45th and Emmett Sts. around 9:45 a.m. to find little Payton Benson critically wounded, police said in a statement.

Cops believe these three man were responsible for the shooting that killed little Payton Benson.
The girl later died at a hospital.
The fatal bullet was fired from more than a city block away, Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday evening at a press conference. The area has recently been rife with gang violence and shootings.

The three men used this car in the fatal drive-by, police say.
The little girl was the city's first homicide victim of the year, he said.
"No one inside Payton's house or anyone associated with the house was the intended target," Schmaderer said.

The hail of bullets struck the little girl’s home, where she sat inside finishing her breakfast.
The girl’s mother was unable to drive the stricken girl to the hospital because the gunfire had flattened the tires of the family car, a relative told WOWT-TV.
“It makes me so mad right now,” Massey Allen, the girl’s second cousin, told the TV station. “She didn’t even start school yet.”

Little Payton, who’d moved with her mother from crime-stricken Chicago, was also the grandniece of Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray.
Cops believe three suspects blasted the house with a handgun and high-powered rifle as they drove past in a dark-colored Jeep Commander, the Omaha World Herald reported.
The suspected vehicle was found about two miles away at St. James Manor, an affordable-housing complex, Chief Schmaderer said.
One man wore a bandana, the newspaper reported.
