LIVERMORE, Calif. — A young mother believed to be suffering from depression admitted to investigators that she stabbed her 7-month-old son to death in a Northern California park, police said Sunday.
Ashley Newton, 23, of San Jose was arrested Saturday on suspicion of murder, the East Bay Regional Parks District Police Department said in a statement.
Investigators continue to interview her family and friends in an attempt to make sense of the alleged crime.
"This is an extremely shocking case for us," said Chief Timothy Anderson of the park's police department.
The motive remains unclear, but Anderson said that Newton had a history of depression and appeared to have self-inflicted knife wounds on her wrist.
Police were called at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on reports of a damaged Honda sedan in the Del Valle Regional Park east of San Francisco. They found the car abandoned with the engine running and an empty child's seat.
Officers were about to tow the car two hours later, believing it was involved in a hit-and-run, when Newton walked up to them holding her lifeless baby, Anderson said.
Officers tried to resuscitate the baby, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Newton was arrested after she made statements implicating herself in the stabbing, Anderson said, adding that investigators found a knife in the area that they believe was used in the alleged crime.
The stabbing occurred in a remote part of Camp Arroyo, the site of a popular children's camp inside the 4,400-acre park south of Livermore, a suburb that's about 45 miles east of San Francisco.
Newton remains in jail with no possibility of release on bond, police said.
She is due in court on Tuesday.

San Jose Mother Pleads Not Guilty to Murder of Her Baby Boy
Thursday, Jun 19, 2014 | Updated 2:34 PM PDT
A San Jose woman pleaded not guilty Thursday to a murder charge for the fatal stabbing of her 7-month-old baby boy in a rural area near Livermore in April.
Ashley Newton, 23, is scheduled to return to Alameda County Superior Court in Pleasanton on July 17 for a pre-trial hearing, according to her attorney, Assistant Public Defender Andrew Steckler.
Newton is charged in connection with the death of her son, William Brian Sherman, on April 26.
East Bay Regional Park District police said they received a call reporting a traffic collision on Arroyo Road near the Wente Vineyards winery at about 10:30 a.m. that day. Responding officers found a badly damaged 2013 Honda sedan that was abandoned on the roadway near the park district's Camp Arroyo facility.
East Bay Regional Park police Sgt. Tracy Desiderio wrote in a probable cause statement that "Newton appeared in the roadway holding a lifeless baby in her arms."
Witnesses immediately began emergency medical aid but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, Desiderio said.
Newton "made several spontaneous statements indicating that she had killed the baby," Desiderio said in her statement.
After officers read Newton her legal rights, she "again admitted to stabbing the baby numerous times," according to Desiderio.
At one point, Newton said, "I'm sorry, I killed my baby," Desiderio wrote.
In addition to murder, Newton is charged with an enhancement clause of using a deadly weapon, namely a knife.
Park district police said a knife they believe Newton used was found at the scene.
