HOUSTON -- A jogger found a missing baby girl alone and crying in tall grass on Houston’s north side early Monday.
The baby, 8-month old Genesis Haley, was at the center of an Amber Alert overnight.
The jogger told police she found the girl crying in a car seat. An ambulance took the baby to the hospital for evaluation, but Houston police said she appeared to be okay.
The search for the suspect involved continued as of early Monday afternoon, however. The Houston Police Department quickly released a sketch of the man.
It all started around 3 a.m. when HPD issued an Amber Alert for baby Genesis.
According to HPD, the baby was in her mother's car at the Texaco gas station at 1110 North Sam Houston Parkway West when the car was stolen. The mom told police she left the child in the car while she went into the station to pay for gas. While she was in the store, she looked outside and saw the car driving away.
A short time later, police found the car abandoned not far away on Greens Parkway near Fall Lake Road. The vehicle’s plates were missing, and items from the car were dumped in a nearby grassy area. The baby and her car seat were missing, however.
HPD K-9 officers and a helicopter assisted in the Amber Alert search before the jogger found the girl -- about five hours after the Amber Alert was first issued.
The woman who found the child doesn't consider herself a hero, however.
"That's my duty as a human being to do that," said the jogger, Hong Nguyen. "I can't believe -- it was so scary to see that situation."
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to immediately call the Houston Police Department at 713-308-3600.
