A local mom will not regain custody of her 2-year-old son, at least until the death of her daughter is fully investigated.

The mother of a 3-year-old who claimed the child was killed in a hit-and-run crash has been charged with child abuse after bruises were found on her other child, deputies said.

Maryanne Schwartz, 22, said her 3-year-old daughter died in a hit-and-run accident on Friday night. When Schwartz called 911, she told them her daughter, Yeliani Schwartz-Ojeda, had been hit in the parking lot of the Grandview Pointe apartments.

Yeliani was pronounced dead at Arnold Palmer Hospital. The medical examiner ruled the child's death a homicide Tuesday, saying the child died from blunt-force trauma and not a hit-and-run accident.

Medical staff at the hospital said Schwartz's other child, a 2-year-old boy, had "multiple bruises on his body that were not consistent with normal child activities," which led to a child abuse charge against her earlier Wednesday, deputies said.

Schwartz and her children lived with another woman, Vanessa Morales, who was also arrested Wednesday. Morales was charged with driving with a suspended license and having an expired driver's license.

Schwartz's 2-year-old boy was placed in foster care. Morales' children are staying with a grandparent.

Schwartz did not appear in court Thursday as expected because she is under medical observation.

ORLANDO, Fla. —The mother of a 3-year-old who claimed the child was killed in a hit-and-run crash has been charged with first-degree murder.

Maryanne Schwartz, 22, said her 3-year-old daughter died in a hit-and-run accident on Friday night. When Schwartz called 911, she told them her daughter, Yeliani Schwartz-Ojeda, had been hit in the parking lot of the Grandview Pointe apartments.

The 911 dispatcher told Schwartz to pull over, and when Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived, they said the mother's claims about a hit-and-run accident were suspicious.

The medical examiner ruled the child's death a homicide Tuesday, saying the child died from blunt-force trauma.

"We are still working this case very, very actively," said Sheriff's Office spokesman Dave Nutting. "One of the elements of first-degree murder is premeditation. So we believe that there is by virtue of the charge, some premeditation on her part."

In her arrest warrant, detectives said the toddler had old injuries on her left arm and scraped knees.

Schwartz was first arrested on Wednesday on a child abuse charged after medical staff at the hospital said her other child, a 2-year-old boy, had multiple bruises on his body that were not consistent with normal child activities, deputies said.

"I only spank him when he needs to be spanked because he is not doing what he's supposed to be doing," Schwartz allegedly told deputies.

Deputies said Schwartz made several statements significant to the homicide investigation, but did not confess to killing her daughter.

Schwartz and her children lived with another woman, Vanessa Morales, who was also arrested Wednesday. Morales was charged with driving with a suspended license and having an expired driver's license.

Schwartz's 2-year-old boy was placed in foster care. Morales' children are staying with a grandparent.
