Cheverly Woman Charged With Murdering Her 2 Children
A Maryland mother has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after admitting to cops she suffocated her two young children.
Sonya Spoon, 24, was taken into custody early Sunday morning after Kayla Thompson, 3, and 1-year-old Ayden Spoon were found unconscious by cops in a home in Cheverly, the Prince George's County Police Department said.
Little Kayla and Ayden later died at the hospital, and their deaths were ruled homicides, cops said..
The cause of the deaths is still to be determined, but the kids' mother confessed to cops that she suffocated the children. According to CBS Baltimore, Spoon had a psychiatric evaluation prior to the tragedy.
The home on Forest Road appeared to belong to the toddlers' grandparents, the Washington Post reported. Gary and Paivi Spoon had lived in the house for more than two decades, according to the newspaper.
The 24-year-old was believed to be staying with her parents.
Neighbors of Sonya Spoon in Chesapeake Beach told the Washington Post that she and her children had been staying with her parents.
“The grandparents were very nice people," a neighbor told the paper. "PAIVI SPOON was very loving with the kids. She would take them walking up and down the boardwalk."
Spoon was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Sonya Katrina Spoon, 24, of Cheverly, Maryland, smiled in her mug shot Sunday after police say she admitted she murdered her two young children.
A 911 call was placed regarding two unconscious children suffering respiratory distress in the early morning hours. Major Cesar Pacheco of Prince George County Police told ABC2 that while on the scene, responding officers found evidence of foul play and the children's mother was detained.
"There were bags that were placed over the children's heads," said Pacheco.
Spoons' children, 1-year-old Ayden Soon and his sister, 3-year-old Kayla Thompson were both rushed to the local Children's Hospital by paramedics, but died within hours of the 911 call.
While in custody, Spoon admitted to police that she had suffocated her children, though investigators said they have not yet established an official cause of death.
The 911 call was placed by a family member of Spoon, who, along with her two children, had been living with her parents for a few months.
Prince George County Police are still investigating Spoon's motives for killing her children, especially when the same mother routinely posted loving photos of her children online. Prince George Police, however, have become aware that the neighboring Cheverly Police Department had visited the Spoon home a week earlier.
"We're aware of a call about a week ago where the Cheverly Police Department responded to that address, and it's our understanding that they brought the mother and now our suspect, Sonya Spoon, into a medical facility for a psychiatric evaluation," Bill Alexander of the Prince George's County Police Department told ABC2.
Prince George County Police are not yet aware of the circumstances that lead Cheverly Police to bring Spoon to the medical facility.
"This is a really tough case to think about---two young kids sleeping in their home murdered by their own mother... really, really tough," said Alexander.

911 Tapes Give Insight Into Toddler Murders
September 11, 2014 10:00 PM
CHEVERLY, Md. (WJZ) — WJZ now has the disturbing 911 calls made the night police say a mother murdered her two children.
The toddlers — a 1-year-old and 3-year-old — were found barely breathing by a relative at their Cheverly home in Prince George’s County.
Rochelle Ritchie reports.
The calls are so disturbing we are unable to share all of it with our viewers. In the calls you can hear the grandmother giving the children CPR and their mother, who admits to suffocating them in the background crying.
It’s just 2 a.m. when a desperate call for help comes into 911. On the other line a grandmother is doing CPR to her grandchildren.
” Caller: 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5.”
“Dispatcher: Hello.”
“Caller: Hello.”
“Dispatcher: This is 911.”
“Caller: Yes please come, 6209 Forest Road in Cheverly, Maryland. We have two unresponsive children.”
On the other end, a grandmother desperately tries to save the life of her two grandchildren with CPR.
“Dispatcher: What happened to them?”
“Caller: Well, I… I will tell you later, just come.”
“Dispatcher: No ma’am tell me now.”
“Caller: Someone tried to suffocate them.”
In the background, Sonya Spoon, the mother of the children, would later be charged in their deaths can be heard crying.
“Sonya: I don’t want to lose them.”
“Caller: Don’t want to lose either one.”
Paramedics arrive and the children, brother and sister, are taken to the hospital where they die just hours apart.
As a result Sonya Katarina Spoon was subsequently charged with two counts of first degree murder.
Police say Spoon confessed to putting plastic bags and duct tape over the children’s heads to kill them.
There is no motive for the murder as of yet.
The Cheverly Police Department says a week prior they were called to the home by the grandmother.
“She advised our officers her daughter had suicidal thoughts and stated she wanted to take the life of her daughter,” said a police spokesman.
Spoon, was taken in for a mental evaluation but was allowed to return to her children and the father of one of the children was attempting to get visitation rights prior to the murders.
Spoon is being held without bond.

Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks announced Thursday that a mother who allegedly murdered her two children in September has been indicted on two counts of first-degree child abuse, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree assault.
Investigators say that on September 7, Sonya Spoon allegedly put plastic bags over her children's heads, secured them with duct tape, and suffocated them. Her 3-year-old daughter and 22-month-old son both died.
Spoon was arrested and charged in the murders on the same day, and she has been in jail since. Future court dates for her are pending.
“The tragic death of these two beautiful, young children, along with the deaths of Knijah Bibb and Laila Miller, really shook our community and kept me up at night,” Alsobrooks said Thursday. “While we will seek justice for the families by prosecuting those we believe responsible for their deaths, we must also come together as a community to end domestic violence and bring peace and unity back to our families.”
