Tyler Goss' Father Speaks out
A mother from St. John was arrested
for accidentally suffocating her infant over the Fourth of July
weekend. Now the baby's father is speaking out for the first time about
what happened.Darren Goss wanted to make it clear he is standing
by his girlfriend. He does not believe she meant to kill the baby. He
thinks she was simply tired, confused, and not thinking about the
consequences of her actions.Tyler Goss suffocated Saturday. He
was two and a half months old. Police said it happened at the hands of
his mother, Stacey Johnson. They believe she was trying to keep the
baby's pacifier in his mouth, wrapping a receiving blanket around his
head to keep the binky in place.
"She's falling apart. It's just eating her up bad," said Darren Goss,
Stacey's boyfriend and Tyler's father. He spoke to her Wednesday for
the first time since the incident."Everyone
wants to be like she did this on purpose. And I think her intent was
only to quiet him down. I don't believe she just thought she had one
child too many."Tyler was Stacey's fourth child and on Saturday
he was fussy. Goss said he awakened at their home in St. John to find
his son unconscious and his girlfriend hysterical. He said at
first he was furious about what happened. But now he said that anger
has mellowed to empathy. He simply thinks Johnson didn't comprehend the
potential consequences."I can kinda understand what she was
probably trying to think of," Goss said. "I mean she could have just
woke me up but she was trying to let me sleep and didn't want anybody
else to wake up so just did the best thing she thought, but it just
happened to be the wrong thing."And while Johnson told authorities she had used the blanket around Tyler's head before. Goss said he'd never seen it.Goss
also discussed previous visits by the Division of Children and Family
Services to the home. He said they related more to a child custody
issue within the family than to any actual neglect. He says he keeps
wondering how and if this death could have been prevented."Most
nights I stay up late, why that night did I have to be in bed at a
decent time? And why wasn't I sleeping in the bedroom instead of on the
couch?" he said. "I mean you can 'if' yourself to death but it's not
going to change anything."And what's more, Goss said Tyler had been thriving against the odds. He had been born several weeks premature."He
fought so hard to get into this world. And it seemed just like all that
fighting," Goss said. "He didn't get to stay too long."Darren Goss is now trying to make funeral arrangements for his son and trying to figure out how to pay for them.Stacey Johnson faces charges of second-degree murder and child endangerment. She remains jailed on $200,000 bond.

Re: TYLER GOSS - 2 months -(2009) St. John MO
A St. John, Missouri, mother is accused of murdering her 2-month-old
baby boy by suffocating him with a pacifier and a receiving blanket.
But the baby's grandmother says her daughter is innocent. St. John
police investigators say Stacy Johnson, 30, confessed to what happened
during her third police interview.
Johnson is charged with murder second degree and first degree
endangering the welfare of a child. They say she suffocated her infant
child identified as Tyler Goss by putting a pacifier in his mouth, then
wrapping a receiving blanket around his mouth and nose to try and keep
the pacifier in his mouth.
Police say they responded to Johnson's home on Endicott in the early
morning hours of the Fourth of July after getting a 911 call for an
infant not breathing.
Investigators say Johnson put Tyler down about 7:00 or 7:30 p.m. last
Friday. Then, they say Tyler started to fuss and that's when Johnson
put the pacifier in his mouth and the blanket around his face to try
and keep him quiet.
Police are stunned by what Johnson allegedly did.
The Assistant St. John Police Chief, Captain J.R. Morris, said, "It
played a toll on everybody. It hits very close to home, we all have
children here. You can't fathom doing anything like that, at least I
can't. I've been in the business a long time and I still, it seems
foreign- how do you explain something like that."
But Johnson's mother says her daughter would never hurt her kids. She
calls the charges false. "I'm very shocked that something like that has
been said," said Teresa Johnson.
We asked her what she wanted people to know about her daughter. "That
she was a good mother and she loved her children," replied Johnson.
We're told Tyler was born two to three months premature. Johnson also
has three other children ranging from one to six years old. They are
staying with other family members.
Teresa tells us her daughter had done the same thing with the pacifier and the blanket once before and Tyler was fine.
Johnson is jailed on a $200,000 cash only bond.
Police say state officials had been called to the home several times
over concerns about the other children. But no charges were ever filed.
