The father of a Bloomington baby found dead Saturday was arrested late Saturday on suspicion of child endangerment.

Police found the father late Saturday walking outdoors near the
apartment where his son was found dead, said Bloomington police
commander Mark Stehlik. Authorities still aren't saying how they think
the baby died, pending a report from the medical examiner's office.
The 8-month-old boy's mother called police about 3:15 p.m. when she
found her son unresponsive. He had been in his father's care in the
family's apartment at 800 W. 106th St. The baby was pronounced dead at
the scene. His father was missing at the time.
The father is in his late 20s. It's unclear if the couple had other children, Stehlik said.
Police are not saying what events led up to the baby's death.

Bloomington
police have arrested a 29-year-old man with a prior history of violence
against children in connection with the death of an 8-month-old infant
found dead by his mother Saturday afternoon. Jesse Hummel, 29, was booked into the Bloomington jail for
felony child neglect after being arrested by police Saturday after 10
p.m. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner had not determined the baby
boy's cause of death Sunday.
The boy was under Hummel's care, but he was not present when
police arrived at 800 W 106th St. The child was reported unresponsive
at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday by his mother, who had been away from home
for the afternoon. Police had been searching for Hummel on Saturday when a worker
at an office complex about two blocks from the apartment reported a
suspicious person. The worker thought the man was prowling cars in the
office complex's parking lot. Hummel fled when police arrived, and was located with the help of a police dog.

"We ultimately located him hiding in the woods," Bloomington Cmdr. Mark Stehlik said.

Stehlik said the charges could change once the cause of death is determined.

Hummel has prior convictions for malicious punishment of a child, domestic abuse by strangulation and driving while impaired.

The malicious punishment conviction was in 2003, following an
arrest by Burnsville police. State records show Hummel has a 7-year-old
child with another woman.

Commander Stehlik did say the father does have a criminal history
that includes charges of malicious punishment of a child and a domestic
assault by strangulation. The man has two other children, one with the
mother of the deceased baby and the other with another woman.
Bloomington Police say they will hand this case over to the Hennepin
County Attorney to consider possible charges. The man is in custody in
Bloomington.

multiple bruises. The next day doctors performed brain surgery to
relieve the pressure. During questioning with police, Hummel
admitted he had gotten frustrated with his son while the two were
alone. Hummel was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Documents show that
four year later, Hummel still wasn't allowed to see his first son, but
had a second son with a new girlfriend. Hummel's second 6-month-old son
was admitted into the Children's hospital intensive care unit. Saturday
afternoon, the child’s mother returned to her home at 800 West 106th
Street to find her baby alone and not breathing. When first responders
arrived at the scene they determined Jaden Hummel was dead. Officers
could not immediately find Hummel who was supposed to be watching the
baby. Officers found Hummel more than 7 hours later under a tree. No
one knows how long the baby was alone inside the family's apartment or
how he died. The medical examiner’s office expects to complete their
findings on how the 8-month-old died on Monday.
