Samuel and Oscar’s Story…

Samuel Esai Calles-Garcia, age 16, and Oscar Giovanni
Calles-Garcia, age 15, are brothers who were living with their aunt in
Colonia, Sacamil, San Salvador. Their mother, Rosa Zavala, wanting
desperately to support her sons, moved to the United States in order to
obtain employment. Rosa began sending money back to support Samuel and
Oscar in hopes of one day being able to send for her sons to come live
with her in New Jersey. Throughout this hard period, Rosa, Samuel and
Oscar maintained constant contact via telephone and e-mail
communications.
On August 13, 2008, the family was dealt a terrible blow, both Samuel
and Oscar were reported missing by their aunt to the El Salvadorian
authorities. An investigation was undertaken but unfortunately the
children were never found. No contact has been made with the children
since that time.
On January 7, 2009, Rosa received a call from an unknown man who
stated that he could arrange the transport of her children to her in the
United States for a fee. Rosa asked to speak to her children but was
refused. The man gave Rosa instructions to wire him money and wanting
desperately to rescue her children, Rosa paid the requested amount in
hopes that Samuel and Oscar would be returned to her safely.
A day later, Rosa received another call. The unknown caller stated
that he had her children and that they were being held in nearby Green Brook, New Jersey. Again Rosa was
told that if she paid the man a specific amount, they would be returned
to her safely. Rosa pleaded to speak to Samuel and Oscar but was denied a
second time. Rosa wired the additional money according to the
directions provided.
The following day, Rosa received yet another telephone call from the
unknown man, saying that the money was not enough, the caller demanded
another payment. Rosa responded with the truth: she had already given
all her money to the caller. In an effort to prevent any harm from
falling on her children due to this denial, Rosa stated that she would
try to come up with the money. Rosa attempted to send more money, but
the transaction was never finalized. The unknown man then called back,
stating that the deal was over.
Rosa never heard from the man, or her children again.
