JACOB WHITFIELD - 10 months (2009) - Williamston SC
A 10-month-old boy died after he stopped breathing at a Williamston
home and authorities said the mother thinks a grease fire may be to
blame.
Capt. Scott White of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said the
mother of the 10-month-old boy tried to revive the child using CPR
after calling authorities at 4 p.m.
Anderson County Hazardous Material Team members prepare to enter a
house in Williamston where a baby died on Sunday. Authorities said
fumes from a fire the day before may have contributed to the death. A
2-year-old also living in the house was in critical condition at a
Greenville hospital and the mother was treated at AnMed Health Medical
Center.

Greenville Memorial Hospital after he was flown there from AnMed Health
Medical Center, White said.
White said the mother reported the 10-month-old had trouble
breathing ever since Saturday night when there was a grease fire in the
home, located on 104 Kirsch Drive. She was checking the 10-month old
when she found he was not breathing.
The mother was treated at AnMed for breathing problems, White said.
White did not know the mother’s condition. None of the victims was identified.
Chief Billy Gibson of the Anderson County Fire Department, said he does not have any information on the grease fire.
“There was no grease fire reported to the fire department,” he said. “Apparently, she extinguished it herself.”
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation to try to determine what caused the death.
The Anderson County coroner’s office did not return a call seeking additional information.

WILLIAMSTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say pesticide foggers may have killed a 10-month-old South Carolina boy and injured his 2-year-old brother.
Multiple media outlets reported that Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said the boys' mother had been using foggers to get rid of an insect problem. He said investigators found seven fogger containers in the single-wide mobile home that are normally used to treat 6,000 square feet each.
Elizabeth Whitfield called 911 Sunday to report her youngest boy was having trouble breathing. Paramedics took all three to a local hospital, where Jacob Whitfield died. Kenneth Whitfield was flown to Greenville and remained in critical condition.
County fire officials say an unreported grease fire in the home did not appear connected to the baby's death.

Baby’s Death from Pesticide Exposure Renews Call for Bug Bomb Ban
(Beyond Pesticides, November 6, 2009) A 10-month old boy died in Williamston, SC after his mother used several insecticide foggers, also known as “bug bombs” inside their home. Elizabeth Whitfield called 911 when her 10-month old son, Jacob Joesup Isiah Leah Whitfield, was having difficulty breathing. She and her older son Kenneth were also experiencing breathing problems. According to Beyond Pesticides, every death and injury caused by foggers must be attributed to a the failure of EPA’s regulatory system to take an unnecessary and ineffective product off the market. The group says that EPA has known for years that foggers kill people and present a serious public health hazard, regardless of warnings on the product label, and can be replaced by safe alternative products and practices. “This child’s death should move the leadership of EPA to take the necessary steps to ban foggers, an action that has been urged for years both within and outside the agency,” said Jay Feldman, executive director of Beyond Pesticies.
