Precious Rivera, 13, left school on Friday but never showed up in the downtown New Haven site where she was supposed to meet her family, the family said.
Precious’ mother, Awilda Martinez, tried to report her daughter missing on Friday, but was told that she had to wait 48 hours, she told reporters.
The Common Ground High School freshman was last seen after dismissal. Her
family said they have not been able to reach her since.
Police Sgt. Martin Dadio, a supervisor in the department’s Special Investigations Unit, said that police received the missing person report on Sunday, and that the department is “actively working on it.”
Police Chief James Lewis said it is not department policy to wait 48 hours and they are looking into dispatch records.
“We should take a report immediately,” Lewis said, “We’re pulling those
tapes in the (communication) center to see if we have a training issue,
to see if someone gave out bad information, or if there was some type
of misunderstanding.”

A 13-year-old who went missing Friday apparently went to New York to
visit a teenaged girl she met online, but has not been in contact with
her family, her mother said Tuesday.

Awilda Martinez said her
daughter, Precious Rivera, a freshman at Common Ground High School,
called a friend Monday night and said she was in New York. The friend
contacted Martinez to let her know her daughter was safe.

Now, Martinez said, both the her daughter and the girl she was visiting have disappeared.

New
Haven Sgt. Martin Dadio, of the department’s Special Investigations
Unit, said police continue to investigate the case as a missing person.

“We
do know she was last seen in Long Island,” he said. “We believe, as the
information was relayed to us, that she went to New York on her own”
accord.

Last seen leaving Common Ground High School on
Friday, a missing 13-year-old has been located. She’s been in New York
with a friend.



That’s
what Precious Rivera’s parents told Common Ground High School Director
Liz Cox on Tuesday afternoon. As of 2 p.m., the high school
freshman was on her way back home to New Haven, Cox said.

After Precious didn’t came home from the 158-student charter school
on Friday, her parents reported her missing and had put up fliers
around town. Precious did not exhibit any unusual behavior on Friday,
Cox said.
