Man gets 10 years in jail for shaking baby to death

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man who shook a 22-month-old to death is sentenced to ten years in prison, but family members say the sentence isn’t enough.
"It's been a very rough year,” said Lattayne Caldwell.
She spoke from the heart Thursday, coming out of the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.
"With my family and God, I've been trying [to] make it through,” Caldwell said.
Last year, her daughter Jalenthia Caldwell died.
"My baby was in a coma, having a seizure, couldn't look at me, couldn't breathe, wasn't swallowing and I mean I'm like what in the world? I'm thinking she's asleep because this is what I was told and she was dying,” she told us in 2009.
A year ago, Caldwell's boyfriend, Randy Moorehead, was babysitting Jalenthia while Caldwell was working.
The 22-month-old started crying.
Moorehead shook her, trying to get her to stop. He shook Jalenthia so hard that she died, and then he took off.
Police found him three days later, hiding out at an uptown apartment.
Thursday in court, Moorehead pleaded guilty to felony child abuse and he was sentenced to ten years in prison.
"I don't really have the words, it's overwhelming, heartbreaking, there's no kind of way to explain how I feel except that I miss my baby,” Caldwell said.
"He took a big part of my life away from me. Ten years is not enough as far as I'm concerned, but I'm content,” said Jalenthia’s grandmother.
From death, sorrow and punishment - to a new chapter in Lattayne's life.
"We're going to get her to the hospital."
The day she gets justice for Jalenthia, she's in labor and walks away promising what happened to her daughter will never happen to son.
