Athens-Clarke police were trying to locate a man they believe kidnapped a three-week old infant late Tuesday, authorities said.
The man, Reginald Cole, is the child's biological father. He knocked the
child out of the hands of the mother as she was breastfeeding, then
drove off in a green 1991 Honda Accord, according to police.
Cole later told his grandfather that he planned to drive to Cornelia to attend a family function.
Later, Cole called the mother from a pay phone in Oconee County off Mars Hill Road, police said.
Police believe the man could harm the child and requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation issue an Amber Alert

A man was jailed Tuesday night after he took
his 3-week-old son from the child's biological mother without
permission, Athens-Clarke police said.Reginald
Shamoud Cole, 27, snatched the infant from his mother as she was
breastfeeding in her home on Windy Hill Way about 4:50 p.m. Cole drove
away with plans to take the child to his own mother's home in Cornelia,
police said.

But when Cole called the child's mother
from a pay phone in Oconee County, he apparently had a change of heart,
telling the woman that he planned to feed the child and then return
him, according to police.

Cole returned the infant
about 8:30 p.m., when he learned that the police were looking for him,
and then turned himself in at the police station on Lexington Road.

While
the child was gone, police consulted with the Georgia Bureau of
Investigation about issuing an Amber Alert, but they decided not to
because investigators didn't believe the child was in danger.
