SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- City police believe a man caused injuries that
killed his 1-year-old daughter. Kyle Baylor, 24, of Springfield is
charged with child abuse for the child's injuries at the family's home
on Wednesday. Police say those charges likely will be upgraded next
week to second-degree murder since the child died just before noon Friday.
Police went to 920 E. Adams St. shortly after noon Wednesday
after Baylor called 911 and said his daughter, Vaniessa, had fallen off
a couch. Police and medical responders found Vaniessa unresponsive. She
was in a hospital in critical condition until her death.
During the early stages of the preliminary investigation,
police became suspicious of the father’s statements. They believe
Vaniessa's injuries are inconsistent with falling off a couch.
The baby had several bruises on her body, bleeding on the the
brain, and fluid in the her lungs. Police say Baylor later admitted to
them that he shook Vaniessa three to four times before throwing her on the couch.
The child’s mother was not at the home at the time the injuries
were received. A 4-year-old sibling was in the home at the time but is unharmed.
A recent study by the agency Kids Count found, of the 115
counties in Missouri, Greene County ranks 114th, second to last, when
it comes to child abuse and neglect. "There are facilities out there that do offer counseling and
services to families through times of crisis. Unfortunately, this
appears to be one of those cases where, with proper intervention, this
could have been avoided," said Springfield Police Maj. Kevin Routh.
A judge set Baylor's bond at $250,000.
