Unidentified Baby - Steuben County/Campbell NY

Campbell, N.Y. - A young child is in critical-but-stable condition
at a Pennsylvania hospital after allegedly being shaken by a Campbell
man, Painted Post-based state police said Friday.

The infant, who was not identified by name, gender or exact age, was
initially treated at Corning Hospital, then airlifted to Geysinger
Medical Center in Danville, Pa. The child, less than a year old,
suffered both subdural and retinal hemorrhaging, troopers said.

Nathan A. Pierpont, 20, of Carriage Drive, Campbell, is accused of
shaking the child on more than one occasion. He was arrested Friday,
the same day the baby was hospitalized, police said.

Pierpont was charged with reckless assault of a child, a class D felony
punishable by up to seven years in state prison. Additional charges are
possible, pending a grand jury review.

Pierpont, whose relationship to the child was not revealed, was
arraigned in Campbell Town Court and sent to the Steuben County Jail on
$25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court
Feb. 23.
Steuben County Child Protective Services assisted with the investigation.
