"Baby Jane" KELLEY-ROGERS - (2008) - Lafayette IN

LAFAYETTE, IN --- A jury found a Lafayette couple guilty in a child abuse case Thursday afternoon. Careena
Kelley and Ryan Rogers were on trial for abusing their infant daughter
in 2008.

This is the second time the case has been brought to trial,
because it was declared a mistrial the first time. They have now been
convicted of neglect of a dependant. This morning, their child
was brought into the Superior Two courtroom and presented to the jury.
She sat on her mother's lap and was asked to touch her nose and chin to
demonstrate her abilities. The prosecutor argued her medical injuries are evidence of "shaken baby syndrome." The
defense argued it was an accident, that the father was carrying the
baby and accidentally dropped her, head-first, onto a vacuum. Kelley
and Rogers will be sentenced in about a month. Rogers is expected to be
ordered to serve at least six years in prison because he has prior
felony convictions.
