"Baby John" MILLER - 1 month - Nashua NH
Nashua NH ---- A Nashua man has been charged
with seriously injuring his 1-month-old son.
Police arrested Joseph Miller Sr., 26, Monday after answering a call for
possible child abuse.
A doctor treating the baby for an unrelated illness discovered that he
had a fractured skull and several fractured ribs after noticing some bruising on
the child's body, police said.
"On arrival of the detectives, a full skeletal survey was requested, at
which time the fractures were observed," said Lt. Jeff Bukunt.
The baby was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center and
eventually transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Court documents said that when Miller was interviewed, he told police he
was having an argument with his girlfriend, Erica Grafton, and that he pulled
the child out of his bed and squeezed too hard.
Miller said he was then carrying the boy from one room to another when he
struck the child's head on the door jamb separating the two rooms.
Miller was charged with two counts of first-degree assault and is being
held on $100,000 cash bail.
"I know that he didn't do it because I was always around when he had my
son," Grafton said. "We have a daughter, too, and nothing has ever happened to
her."
Grafton said she and Miller have been together for about two years. She
said he has an anger problem, but he never takes it out on the children.
Police said the injured infant is in the legal custody of the Department
of Children, Youth and Families and is expected to be placed with family
members.
Police said he is expected to recover.
