"Jane Doe" - Accused/Laurie Davenport - St. Johnsbury VT

St. Johnsbury VT ---- A St. Johnsbury woman is accused of several crimes involving a minor.
The victim is a girl who police said the woman cut with knives, and
sexually assaulted.
Laurie Davenport, 42, faces eight charges, six of them felonies. She's
accused of sexually assaulting and abusing a minor for years at her St.
Johnsbury home.
"She does have a past record. It's for other types of offenses including
cruelty to a child," said Lisa Warren, the Caledonia County state's attorney.
Police said that in December, the girl was reported missing. When they
found her, police said she told them Davenport used shovels, boiling water and
knives to hurt her, even using pliers to pull out her teeth, and burning her
with hot cookie sheets.
"It's alleged that Ms. Davenport committed four acts of aggravated
domestic assault on a minor, and there are allegations of two counts of
aggravated sexual assault," Warren said.
The accusations in this case are so disturbing that it was brought up
when the governor signed the proclamation declaring April "Child Abuse
Prevention Month" on Tuesday.
The proclamation urges communities to speak up and report suspected cases
of child abuse.
Neighbors said that while many knew Davenport had a history of child
cruelty convictions, the community is still shocked at the extent of the
charges, and saddened.
"Maybe you know that child, or maybe you knew that person and didn't know
that was going on, so it is surprising to hear it's going on in our own little
town where you feel like you know everyone," said one local resident.
Over the phone, Davenport declined to comment on the accusations.

St. J woman pleads guilty to child abuse

A St. Johnsbury woman pleaded guilty Monday in a brutal child abuse case.

Forty-two year-old Laurie Davenport pleaded guilty to several charges and faces up to 22 years in prison. She was arrested last year for hitting her 11-year-old daughter with a hammer, burning her with cookie sheets, cutting her with knives and pulling her teeth out with pliers. Sex abuse charges were dropped. Davenport was convicted in 2008 for leaving her daughter locked in a bedroom while she went to work.
