A young mother and her boyfriend were arrested and
charged Saturday with the physical abuse of a 19-month-old child.
Ashley Schumm, 24, of Prattville, and her boyfriend G.W. Stubbs, 20, of
Eclectic, were charged with aggravated child abuse for the “torture,
willful abuse of a child under 18,” according to Chief Deputy Ricky
Lowery of the Elmore County Sheriff’s Department.
The victim was “just a little baby,” Sheriff’s Department Investigator Jeremy Amerson
said. “There was bruising on (the child’s) face, chest, back, pretty
much everywhere except (the child’s) legs.”
The couple took the child to Prattville Baptist Hospital Saturday evening. Hospital
employees phoned Prattville police when they became aware of the extent
of the child’s injuries.
Because Schumm and Stubbs said the
injuries occurred at Stubbs’ home in the Eclectic area, Elmore County
Sheriff’s deputies met Prattville police at the hospital.
“I saw pictures of the child,” Sheriff Bill Franklin said.
“It’s just horrendous.” The couple told Amerson they’d noticed
the bruising at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, but only at 6 p.m. did they take
the child to the hospital, he said. They were interviewed and then
arrested at the Elmore County Jail in Wetumpka.
The 19-month-old is in the care of the state Department of Human Resources, Amerson said.
The child’s biological father, who lives in Florida, is seeking
custody, Franklin said. The father visited with investigators Monday,
Amerson said, to monitor the investigation.
Schumm and Stubbs are being held at the Elmore County Jail on cash bonds of $30,000 each.
Stubbs was also charged with failure to appear on a past second-degree marijuana arrest.
