A teenager missing from California for nearly a year has family
ties to Fremont, authorities said.
Detective Corina Torrero of the Los Angeles County Sheriff
Department said 14-year-old Richard Burton, who also goes by the
name Cash Anderson, has a mother and maternal grandmother in
Fremont, as well as other relatives.
Torrero said that tips have been received that Burton is or has
been in the Fremont area and likely is staying with family or family friends.
"A child this age is not surviving all by himself in this world
without any assistance or some kind of protection," she said.
Burton was a ward of the state in California when he left the state
last July and was reported to be both in Fremont and Lincoln, Torrero said.
Torrero said it's unclear how Burton got to Nebraska.
"Certainly he was 13 years old at the time, so he didn't do it himself," she said.
It's not the first time Burton has come to Nebraska, Torrero said.
He made it to Lincoln in December 2008 before being located by
authorities and returned to California.
Torrero said it's unclear if Burton is attending school or
receiving proper care in his current situation.
"I think we're really doing him a disservice," she said. "He's
probably not getting the proper education and probably not
socializing within his age group the way a teenager his age would like to."
Torrero said it's important for Burton to return to California to
let the courts decide where it would be best for him to live.
"We can't do that unless he's here and we talk to him and find out
what his needs are and where he wants to stay," Torrero said.
