BRITTNEY KUSTES - 19 yo - Brooks (NE of Fort Knox) KY
A Kentucky 19-year-old who has been missing for more than a week may be
with a convicted sex offender who held her against her will more than a
year ago, police said.
Brittney Kustes was last seen at her grandparents' swimming pool in Brooks, Ky., on
July 17 and her mother reported her missing two days later. Police said
they have reason to believe she is with Roy Vernon Elwell, 34, who has
kidnapping and unlawful containment convictions on his record.
"He's a pretty bad dude," Bullitt County Sheriff's Department Det.
Scotty McGaha said. "He's a person of interest. We want to talk to him.
We haven't been able to find him."
Laurie Kustes, Brittney's mother, said the 19-year-old was supposed to
testify against Elwell next week, but McGaha said he could not confirm
that and did not know what the case involved.
Elwell was not at the address were he is registered as a convicted sex
offender, and police came up empty at other locations they checked, McGaha said.
But one of those places was a home in Spencer County, Ky., where a woman
told police she had been with Elwell, McGaha said. When Bullitt County
investigators contacted their counterparts in Spencer County to ask them
to look into the tip, they were told that a dead body had been found at
the house this past week.
The Kentucky State Police have opened a death investigation in the case,
but McGaha said it was not known whether there is any connection to Elwell.
Kustes was last seen by a friend who was swimming with her at her grandparents' pool on July 17, her mother said.
"[The friend] said Vernon drove up and down the street a couple times
looking for her, and the next thing he knew she was gone with him,"
Laurie Kustes said. The young woman was seen on Tuesday, by a woman who described her as
having black marks, bruises and tears on her face, Kustes said. The
woman said that when she approached Brittney, who was in a small gold
car, to ask if she needed help, a man yelled at her to get away and they drove off.
Brittney Kustes' first involvement with Elwell began a year and a half ago, when she was 17, McGaha said.
"It's my understanding she was not with him willingly," the detective said.
Her mother said that when Brittany came back that time, after being held several days, she was addicted to methamphetamine.
"She was into the drug world and that's how she met this scum," Laurie Kustes said. "He was holding her against her will."
Since then, Brittney went to rehab and has been able to kick her
addiction. She got a job and was "really happy," and there was no way
she would have gone with the man willingly, her mother said.
"She's terrified of this guy," she said.
"She was doing great and we talked every day," Lori Kustes said. "There
[were] no problems for her to take off and leave. She hated this guy,
actually, for what he turned her life into."

Snipped from above. This should be enough to have APB's etc or whatever they do to raise the alarm as surely it is serious when a RSO goes off the radar but the article doesn't give me much confidence that LE are in urgent mode over this case.

A Bullitt County family is frantic, worried about their 19-year old
daughter. They fear she is with a registered sex offender who also has a
lengthy criminal record.
Family members say Brittney Kustes disappeared Saturday July 17th.
She left behind her makeup and her clothes. She did take her phone, but
when you call it, her family says they get nothing. Police say they
have reason to believe she is with 34-year old Roy Vernon Elwell, who
has kidnapping and unlawful containment convictions on his record.
Relatives say Kustes was expected to testify against Elwell next week.

A 19-year-old woman is missing and Bullitt
County detectives need your help to find her. Her family is offering a
reward for any tips leading to her location.
Brittney Kustes disappeared Saturday July
17th and was reported missing a day later, according to her mother. The
young woman's SUV is still parked at her grandparent's home where she
left it.
"Her clothes are at home, her makeup, all of
her belongings, except her phone," said Brittney's mother Laurie Kustes.
"She does have a phone but (when you call) you get nothing."
The disappearance comes less than two weeks
before Brittney was scheduled to testify in court against Roy Vernon
Elwell July 28th. Bullitt County Sheriff's Detective Scotty McGaha
described Elwell as a man with a "lengthy record," one that includes a
requirement to register as a sex offender for life, according to the
Kentucky State Sex Offender Registry. Though detectives are not saying
Elwell had anything to do with Brittney's disappearance, his past has
made him a person of interest. His prior offenses included kidnapping
and unlawful confinement of a 17-year-old victim. Elwell's last reported
address is 9707 Lancewood Road in Louisville.
"We've checked his residence, or the one he
has got reported as his sex offender status...he's not been found
there," McGaha said of repeated checks.
Brittney's mother described the young woman
and 34-year-old Elwell as "acquaintances" who met through mutual friends
more than a year ago. Laurie Kustes said drug addiction kept her
daughter and Elwell connected until Brittney attended rehab in 2009.
"She hated him for what her life had become at that point in time," Laurie Kustes said.
Kustes said she and her daughter made plans
for a shopping trip the weekend Brittney disappeared. She said repeated
calls went unreturned.
"I got paid Friday and we were going to go
shopping over the weekend," Laurie Kustes said. "I called her Saturday, I
called her Sunday, it was weird. I go looking for her, found out she
was seen in the car with this Vernon Elwell."
Brittney Kustes is described as petite with
blond hair including dark brown layers underneath. Anyone with
information is asked to contact the Bullitt County Sheriff's Department
at 502-955-7480.
"I can't even explain it. We don't know we
don't anything about her if she's alive, if she's well," Laurie Kustes
said holding back tears. "We can't sleep, we can't eat...it's a
nightmare, it's a true nightmare."
The family is offering a $1,000 reward for any tips leading to Brittney's location.

Police continue their search for a missing 19-year-old, and they said she may be in danger.Brittney
Kustes was last seen on Saturday, July 17, swimming at her
grandmother's house. Whether she left there voluntarily or not, police
are not sure, but they said the person she has been spotted with over

history and is a registered sex offender in the state of Kentucky. He
has convictions for kidnapping, unlawful confinement, robbery and
pending drug trafficking charges in Jefferson County, and similar
charges in Oldham, Bullitt and Elliott counties.Numerous police
agencies across the state have been following up on leads since WLKY
first reported Kustes missing last week, but so far, they've come up
short."We know that he's been told that we are looking for him
and he's basically -- from the witnesses that we've talked with and seen
him -- that he just laughs it off," said Detective Scotty McGaha of the
Bullitt County Sheriff's Department. "So there's some great deal of
concern.""The morally right thing to do is to help her," said
Laurie Kustes, Brittany's mother. "She is 19, but she's still my little
girl, and she's been gone for nearly 11 days. Do the right thing."Brittany

Tompkinsville and the Louisville area. Police said they are moving
around, but seem to be staying relatively close by.If you see either one of them, you're asked to call your local police, or Bullitt County Central Dispatch at (505) 955-7480.

Re: BRITTNEY KUSTES - 19 yo - Brooks (NE of Fort Knox) KY
A Bullitt County mother hasn’t slept for days because her teenage daughter went missing more than a week ago.
Laurie Kustes said she never expected 35-year-old Roy Vernon Elwell
to show up to court on Wednesday for a pre-trial in Jefferson County,
but she went to court anyway.
Kustes said she’s convinced Elwell is with her missing daughter.
To add insult to injury, when she arrived she discovered that the case
was suddenly moved to another date because of another trial.
On Wednesday morning, she remarked, "I just want my daughter back
and the longer it takes, the more crazier this is all becoming."
Laurie Kustes is desperately searching for her missing teenage
daughter, and is now getting help from the website of the television
show “America’s Most Wanted.”
If Brittney isn’t found by Saturday, her story will be told on “America’s Most Wanted” on Saturday night.
When Laurie Kustes showed up in court Wednesday morning,
she found out that Ellwell’s pre-trial had been cancelled.
Elwell was due in court on Wednesday and has a warrant for
non-compliance as a registered sex offender in Jefferson County.
Elwell’s sister was at the courtroom, though, and Kustes said she
spoke to her. Ellwell’s sister said she doesn’t know where her brother could be today.
He's a person of interest in Brittney’s “Missing Persons” case.
Kustes says Elwell stalked her daughter for years and that he's violent and highly unstable.
"I just don't know how the outcome is going to end up," said Kustes.
The Bullitt County Sheriff’s Department said Elwell is still only a
person of interest in this ‘Missing Persons’ case. However, he does have
a long rap sheet, including assault, kidnapping and drug charges.
Brittney Kustes is described as being 5’2” with blonde hair and brown
highlights. She has a butterfly tattoo on her right leg and a red star tattoo on her left.
Detectives urge you to call 911 immediately if you know anything about this case.

Elwell became a registered sex offender after he kidnapped and
unlawfully confined a 17-year-old, according to the Kentucky Sex

Police report that Brittney Kustes, who had been missing since
July 20th, was found on Friday. She has since been taken to University
Hospital and is with family.
Brittany's mother spoke briefly outside the hospital.
She purported physical, mental and sexual abuse but did not want to go into detail.
“She’s been through a very dramatic experience,
I don’t know how long it will take to help her,” said Brittany’s mother.
Bullitt County sheriff's officials say Kustes’ grandparents got a
call on Friday, saying that she had been dropped off at the Lebanon Junction exit.
Detective Scotty McGaha confirms that the teen was dropped off
near an I-65 exit ramp at the Lebanon Junction exit.
He says that an acquaintance of Kustes’ then picked up the teen.
Kustes, 19, was supposed to testify against 35-year-old Roy Vernon Elwell on July 28th.
Kustes' mother, Laurie, says Elwell stalked her daughter in the past
and that Kustes had previously disappeared with Elwell. When she came
home, she was addicted to meth.
Laurie says her daughter recently kicked that addiction.
Bullitt County police say Elwell is a person of interest in Kustes'
disappearance. If you have any information, call Bullitt County police at 955-7480.

Re: BRITTNEY KUSTES - 19 yo - Brooks (NE of Fort Knox) KY
A Bullitt County teenager reportedly held against her will for two weeks with a registered sex offender has been found.
"She just cried and said 'Am I safe now?' And
I said, 'Yes, you're safe now," says Laurie Kustes as she describes the
moment she reunited with her missing 19-year-old daughter Brittney. "It
was the most beautiful thing in the world. I didn't know if I would
ever see her again."
Friday morning's emotional homecoming ended a
two week search that had Bullitt County authorities looking for the
teen as far away as Glasgow, Kentucky.
"This has been a nightmare for my whole entire family and friends," says Kustes.
Sheriff deputies say though Brittney is
legally an adult, they believe she was held against her will by Roy
Vernon Elwell, a registered sex offender with drug and kidnapping
charges. He was living at Brittney's grandparents' house, but her family
warned the teenager to stay away from him.
"He's a pervert," said one family member. "He preys on young woman."
Authorities would not say where Elwell held
Brittney. But her ordeal came to an end when she was dropped off by a
woman in a pick-up truck near I-65 and Lebanon Junction.
"We know that the female who dropped her off
was an acquaintance of Vernon Elwell so we'll want to talk to her," says
Bullitt County detective Scotty McGaha.
Deputies say Brittney called an ex-boyfriend who notified her family and authorities.
"She's been through a life changing experiences," says Kustes. "Every abuse you can think of
Investigators are still trying to track down
Elwell. Brittney's mom tonight is grateful to have another day with her
daughter. "She's alive and we have her back."
If you know the whereabouts of Elwell or his
female friend who dropped Brittney, call the Bullitt County Sheriff's
office at (502) 543-2262

Re: BRITTNEY KUSTES - 19 yo - Brooks (NE of Fort Knox) KY
A Bullitt County woman has been released from
University Hospital one day after she was found alive. Authorities say
19-year-old Brittney Kustes disappeared nearly two weeks ago and the
search continues for the man believed responsible. 34-year-old Roy
Vernon Elwell is listed as a lifetime registered sex offender, last
spotted off Interstate-65 and in the Fairdale area Friday July 30th.
"They were dispatching police cars to try to
get to him. I know the U.S. Marshals service was closing in on him
yesterday and he was able to get away from him before they had actually
gotten to him," Bullitt County Detective Scotty McGaha said. "Some other
police vehicles were looking for him and they got pretty close, but
then he was able to elude them and take an exit and we don't know where
he went from there."
Detectives describe Elwell as possibly armed,
dangerous and well connected. He has been seen in Jefferson, Bullitt
and Spencer counties and Tompkinsville, Kentucky in Monroe County last
weekend according to authorities. He is believed to be driving a vehicle
described as an aqua-green Pontiac Grand Prix.
"He has got a lot of friends in this area, a
lot of acquaintances so he has been in this area a lot in the past,"
Det. Mcgaha said."We believe he could be changing vehicles. We
understand he has access to a lot of vehicles. We've had some call-ins
on him being seen with other people, most of the calls we've received
not with the same person, but he has been with other people."
McGaha described Elwell as "infatuated" with
Kustes and said Kustes has been moved to a safe place as this
investigation continues. The detective says another female came forward
this week, claiming she was hurt by Elwell too.
"Some of the things she has told us pretty
much confirm things that Brittney has told us, that it is almost like
you are looking at the exact same case," McGaha said. "These women went
through some things that are horrible and there are a lot of
similarities out there to both of them. That's consistent and that's
frightening."
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Roy Vernon Elwell is asked to contact police.

A Bullitt County teen who was missing for nearly two weeks is now reunited with her family.Brittney
Kustes, 19, was released from University Hospital Friday night,
according to family members. They said she was being held against her
will by 36-year-old Vernon Elwell, a registered sex offender with a
lengthy criminal history."She's quiet at times and then out of
nowhere she'll just start telling a story of what she went through at
any particular time," said Laurie Kustes, Brittney's Mom.During
the 13 days Kustes was missing, she told family members she was locked
in a bedroom of a Glasgow-area home. "She wasn't allowed to call, text
-- anything. (Elwell) was in control of everything. He took her phone
physically apart. He was aware the phone was being tracked," Kustes
said.As family frantically tried to locate Brittney, Kustes said
Elwell used her media interviews to emotionally abuse Brittney. "He
would pull my interviews up on the internet and laugh at her about it
and taunt her."Laurie Kustes said her daughter moved throughout
wooded areas with Elwell, but mostly stayed at the Glasgow-area home.
"The police went to that house off a tip and these people have police
scanners and knew the police were coming and Vernon took Brittney out to
the woods and laid her down in the woods with a knife to her," she
said. When Brittney arrived at University Hospital Friday
afternoon, she had injuries from being strangled and choked and
scratches on her legs from being in the woods. She was also
malnourished. "She got to eat some food she said they had in the
kitchen, but not much," said Kustes.Sgt. Scotty Mcgaha with the
Bullitt County Sheriff's Department declined to give any details
Saturday afternoon, but said Brittney went through an frightening
ordeal. "They're horror stories. They're sickening. Frightening," said
McGaha.Kustes said her daughter was set up and that's how she
ended up missing from her grandmother's home in Brooks, KY., on July 17.
"Vernon had a woman come and get Brittney from the house and the
friend that was swimming at the house--that said Brittney disappeared--
left with them all. So, it was sort of a set up type deal and Brittney
sort of felt safe leaving and thought nothing about it," she said.Brittney
is not ready to speak publicly about what happened to her, but did send
a message through her Mom: "She would love to thank everyone that
participated in the search for her, helping do whatever it might have
been -- make a phone call, pass a flyer, get on Facebook and she's so
thankful she's home."Police are still searching for Elwell. Sgt.
McGaha said Elwell was spotted Friday night in the area. They believe he
might have exited Interstate 65 at the Bernheim Forest exit, heading
toward Bardstown. At the time, he was driving a green Pontiac Grand
Prix that is damaged on the driver's side and has plastic hanging out
the passenger side rear window.Brittney's family said they have
also received tips that Elwell has been sleeping in the woods in tents
in the Knob Creek area.

Elwell is said to have close-cropped hair and no facial hair.
Police are also getting reports of more possible victims.
"I had heard from some that were thinking about coming in, but you have to
remember, for some reason, a lot of them are afraid to talk," McGaha

No wonder LE hasn't lodged kidnapping charges yet. This asswipe was living at the place she disappeared from. Sheesh! People get a grip on reality. HE went missing with her before and got her hooked on meth, and according to last night's JVM show, he did the same thing all over again. A leopard never changes its spots!

still waiting on autopsy results.

The manhunt for a convicted sex offender is
over. Roy Vernon Elwell, Junior being held in the Bullitt County
Detention Center awaiting transfer to Louisville on outstanding
warrants. Police searched for Elwell for nearly 2 1/2 weeks and
authorities say he was with a missing Bullitt County teen.
More than a week after a national TV plea for Elwell to run himself in, the tips never stopped.
"I had gotten a call from the U.S. Marshals
that they thought that they were probably getting some good locations,"
said Lt. Scotty McGaha of the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.
Late on August 4, one of those locations
panned out. Marshals found Elwell hiding at the home of a relative off
Highway 44 in an area of Bullitt County referred to as Midgetville.
"He kinda talked in circles, McGaha said. "He mentioned a lot of different things."
Police said Elwell, who had been on the run
for more than two weeks, had been moving around. Bullitt County
detectives named Elwell as a person of interest in the two week
disappearance of 19-year-old Brittney Kustes.
"They wanted him to get rid of the girl, the people that he was around, because it was just too hot," said McGaha.
According to McGaha, the attention on the
case is the reason why Kustes was dropped off on July 30 at Lebanon
Junction off Interstate 65. Laurie Kustes, Brittney's mother, says her
daughter was with Elwell willingly at first, but when Brittney wanted to
go home several hours later, she was held against her will.
"She wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom by
herself, just like he was treating her like some horrible person," said
Laurie Kustes. "It will all come out … bad things were done to her.
McGaha said that for the majority of the
two-week period, the pair was in Monroe County. What happened during
those two weeks is still under investigation, as are whether Elwell will
face charges in this case.
As he was being taken to jail late Wednesday
night, Elwell was asked if he had anything to say about what happened or
if he hurt Brittney in any way? Elwell responded, "No, I did not."
The Kustes family is relieved that Elwell is finally behind bars.
"She went through a traumatic experience and she's going to take a long time to help her get through this," said Laurie Kustes.
A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Elwell
on August 5 on six charges, including fleeing and evading, criminal
mischief, and reckless driving.
