Search and rescue teams are in the Arizona wilderness looking for a toddler who wandered away from his family.
The search is going on around the Beaver Creek campground just north of
Rimrock and there has been a twist in the search.
Originally 2-year-old Syler Newton was thought to have gone missing
while camping with his mother, grandmother and siblings. Yavapai County
sheriff’s deputies now say the woman who reported the boy missing
was not his mother but has been trying to adopt him for some time.
It is still unclear what role that plays in this situation. Deputies
say they are still operating under the assumption that Syler just
wandered away from the campground.
The adults reportedly discovered that Syler was missing from his sleeping bag just before 2 a.m. Sunday.
The boy has light brown hair, blue eyes and he was only wearing a
diaper. He is about 3 feet tall and weighs approximately 20 pounds.
Dwight Develyn, with YCSO, says, “We're obviously very concerned about a
2-year-old wandering around up in this wilderness area. We've brought
in over 50 rescue personnel including bloodhounds, horses, we've had
helicopter flyovers by DPS Ranger, ATV, tracking teams and on and on to
try and locate this child."
The search continues in full force but the new information that there
was some sort of custody issue going on between the boy's biological
parents and the woman who was with him at the campground should play a
part in this investigation.
Bloodhounds have been given a piece of Syler's clothing for tracking.
Investigators are looking into foul play and are not ruling anything
out at this point.

Search and rescue teams are in the Arizona wilderness looking for a
Flagstaff toddler who disappeared from his family's campsite.
The search is going on around the Beaver Creek Campground just north of
Rimrock and there has been a twist in the search.
Originally, 2-year-old Syler Newton was thought to have gone missing
while camping with his mother, grandmother and siblings. Yavapai County
sheriff’s deputies are confirming that the woman who reported the boy missing
is his custodial mom. She told deputies that she is in the process of
legally adopting Syler, who has been in her care for several months.
It is unclear what role that plays in this situation. Deputies say
they are still operating under the assumption that Syler just wandered
away from the campground.
The Flagstaff family went to the campsite on Friday. According to
Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, the
custodial mother claims she last saw Syler around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday
inside a tent immediately adjacent to the tent she slept in.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., she found Syler missing and conducted a
search before calling 911. D'Evelyn said the first official call
recorded by YCSO Communications came at approximately 2:30 a.m. from a
camp host and deputies were on scene by 3 a.m.
Deputies contacted and spoke with more than 25 campers who were on site
at the time of Syler's disappearance. Non-family member campers told
deputies they saw Syler at the campsite Saturday evening.
As of Sunday, the campground was cleared of all visitors to allow search crews to continue their work.
The boy has light brown hair, blue eyes and he was only wearing a

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Search and rescue members continue to comb the Beaver Creek Campground where a
2-year-old Flagstaff boy went missing this past weekend.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office continues to look for Syler Newton, who
apparently wandered from his family's campsite early Sunday morning.
Bloodhounds from the Department of Corrections, a Department of Public Safety
helicopter crew, and volunteers are part of the 24/7 search
in the area, which is about two miles from Interstate 17 and off Forest Road 618.
Sheriff's Spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn
said the boy's custodial mother, Christina Priem, 36, Christina's
mother, Nancy Collins, 57, 12-year-old sister, 14-year-old brother and a
14-year-old friend went on the camping trip.
D'Evelyn said the family is not a suspect or facing any charges at this time and
they are cooperating with investigators, who also are working to talk
to Newton's biological mother.
Priem, who is attempting to adopt Syler, last saw him in a sleeping bag
with one of her children around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
Around 1:45 a.m., Priem discovered Newton was missing and originally tried to
call the Sedona Fire Department for help about 15 minutes later,
according to D'Evelyn, who said YCSO deputies got to the scene around 3 a.m.
D'Evelyn said deputies went through
interviews with about 25 campers and took the family's tents along with a
Toyota Corolla and Camry to search for evidence.
"We're working from the inside out," he said.
Deputies came up empty on a sex offender search, according to D'Evelyn.
A little toy on a bench is all that remained early Monday evening from the family's campsite.
The search is puzzling for Jeff Newnum and his crew.
Newnum, Search and Rescue coordinator for the Sheriff's Office, said the area
was cut into grids as they look for places a small child might hunker
down in like under a bush or a fallen tree.
A search of five swimming pools in the area also came up negative, according to
Newnum, who said they have not found any trace of blood evidence from an animal
trying to take Newton away.
Mountain lions, insects, lizards, bears and coyotes live in the area, but no dingoes.
"We have not seen any type of predatory attack in our search area," he said.
The heat, humidity and rugged terrain also are a factor.
D'Evelyn said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is helping out and at least
one of the adults with Newton took a polygraph test, which is routine in a
missing child investigation.
Newnum said the search at the campgrounds will continue for the next few days.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Tuesday is day 3 on the search for 2-year-old Syler Newton, and as
the search widens, it has not revealed any significant developments. Yavapai
County Sheriff's Office Detectives spent the night searching the Beaver
Creek Campground for any trace of Syler, but have not recovered
anything. They're also combing the interiors and exteriors of two
vehicles that were towed from the campsite. Syler Newton
disappeared early Sunday morning from his tent, wearing only a diaper,
while camping with a family who was planning to adopt him. Now
the biological mother of the boy, who lives in Indiana, is speaking out.
She told us by phone that she's planning to come to Arizona to search
for her son. "Please return him to the people that he knows, that
he loves that love him, that's where he needs to be... we miss him very
much, we're all very very worried about him," says Charity Newton. "If
he's out there, I don't want them to stop looking for him, if there's a
chance that he could be found alive I don't want them to stop." Syler
was camping with his custodial mother, Christina Priem, when he
vanished. Priem was in the process of adopting Syler -- Newton says she
thought Priem would give him a better life. "This is nothing to
do with a custody battle, I do believe that this is just an unfortunate
accident... just because my life is messed up and I felt like I wasn't
going to be a very good provider for my son, doesn't mean that I didn't
love or care for him," says Newton. Investigators are looking at
several different scenarios -- they're not sure if Syler wandered off,
fell into a nearby creek, or was abducted. On Monday, Priem was given a
polygraph test. "I don't think that she would do anything to
hurt my son. I wouldn't want to adopt my son out to someone that I feel
would have hurt him." Investigators haven't released the results of the polygraph test yet, but they have said Priem is being cooperative.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
The search for a 2-year-old boy who vanished in the wee hours Sunday from a campground near Sedona, expanded Tuesday.
Several ground teams were involved, along with at least five search
dogs. The FBI and units from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office joined
the hunt for Syler Newton.
The search is being handled in a two-prong manner, said Dwight D'Evelyn of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.
"The first priority is to find Syler, which is the mission of the
massive search effort underway with no resource being spared. The second
prong is comprised of an extensive investigation into the incident, the
parties involved, and anything else that might shed light on Syler's
disappearance."
Syler was wearing only a diaper when he was last seen around 12:30 a.m.
Sunday sleeping in a tent at the Beaver Creek Campground, near
Interstate 17 and State Route 179, south of Flagstaff. His custodial mom
discovered him missing about 1:45 a.m.
The custodial mom, Christina Priem, 37, and her mother, Nancy Collins,
57, both from Flagstaff, have taken polygraph examinations, D'Evelyn
said. He said that is a typical procedure in such cases and the two have
been cooperative with detectives.
Collins and Priem were sleeping in a tent with Syler and Christina's
12-year-old daughter when the boy disappeared, D'Evelyn said. Priem's
14-year-old son and a friend were sleeping in a nearby tent.
Priem told detectives she is in the process of adopting Syler. D'Evelyn
said the boy's biological mother has been located, living out of state,
and detectives are trying to determine the relationship between her and
Priem.
About 25 campers were in the area when Syler was reported missing.
D'Evelyn said they had been required to register at the campground and
that all cooperated when contacted by detectives.
He said some water pools along the nearby creek can be as deep as 5 feet and divers continued searching them Tuesday.
Syler is described as about 3 feet tall and weighs about 20 pounds.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office immediately via 911 or (928) 771-3260.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
News in the search for missing Sylar Newton has become disappointingly
thin in the past day. The mystery surrounding the case gets deeper as
the disappearance stretches from days to a week.
The 2-year-old boy disappeared Sunday morning from the Beaver Creek
Campground during a camping trip with his custodial mother, her children
and a friend.
There are few significant new details that have been released by the
Yavapai County Sheriff's Office since Tuesday.
Though it is hard to imagine a barefoot child in a diaper walking from
the tent he shared with Christina Priem, a Flagstaff woman and her
daughter, search crews are looking in every hole he may have fallen into
for miles around. Reportedly, even sonar cameras were used in duck
ponds and an empty well head.
Bloodhounds, loaned by the State Department of Corrections, lost the scent of the child.
The FBI has located Charity Newton, the little boy's biological mother in Indiana.
It is still unclear how Christina Priem gained custody of the child, but
Newton is said to have spoken with a Phoenix TV station to say that
there is no custody issue involved and she believes the disappearance to
be an unfortunate accident.
A professional tracker reportedly only found dog tracks in the area.
No blood or other animal tracks were discovered.
At one point, 50 officers and search and rescue volunteers were combing
the campground and surrounding area for the 3-foot-tall little boy.
Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn says there is no sign of foul play in the disappearance.

Tom can we change the topic name to Sylar which his biomom says is apparently the correct spelling although they have not been able to change the FB page. LE spelt it wrong initially.
Another bizarre case. How could he have just wandered off in the dark by himself? Not likely IMO.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
The Kyron Horman story has dominated local news coverage for nearly two months now. However, there are many other missing children out there.
While the massive search for Kyron continues, a Portland woman is
feeling the same type of pain – now wondering where her 2-year-old
nephew could be.
'We ask ourselves 'Why?'"
Like so many, at first Andrea Wagner couldn't believe the story surrounding Skyline School's missing second grade.
"With Kyron, when I heard the news about him I went home, I held my kids
and I thanked God that that couldn't happen to me," said Wagner. "And
that's not the case, you know; it could happen to anyone anywhere and
it's just the most devastating thing you could ever imagine."
It's devastating because her 2-year-old nephew Sylar Newton has been missing for nearly a week.
"We ask ourselves 'Why?' all the time," she tells us, "and we just don't know."
Passing days take a toll
Sylar disappeared this past Sunday from his family's tent during a
camping trip in Arizona. Since then, searchers have scoured the
wilderness – trying to figure out where the toddler could be.
And the passing days are taking a toll.
"All they can do is cry," says Sylar's aunt. "... They have the same questions that everybody else has: 'Why?'"
Wagner's sister has custody and is adopting Sylar from a family friend.
They have no idea who would want to snatch him, but are now hoping
someone did.
That's because a kidnapping could increase his chances of still being
alive – instead of wandering off to fend for himself. Arizona
investigators aren't sure if someone took Sylar. They said he may have
simply wandered off, or been carried off by a wild animal.
"My family will never give up on him," Wagner said. "We just can't look
at the worst in it and I refuse to ... He's a 2-year-old precious boy.
That's all we can do."
In Sylar's and Kyron's cases, and any missing child's case, authorities
ask that you call 9-1-1 immediately if you know anything.

Arizona authorities searching for a toddler missing for a week have been
combing through a landfill in hopes of finding some evidence that will
lead to the boy and in fear they might find him dead.Yavapai County
sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said Saturday that authorities have
searched the Gray Wolf Landfill for anything that might help them find
2-year-old Sylar Newton.Sylar and family members were camping
July 25 at a campground in Rimrock, about 40 miles south of Flagstaff,
when Sylar was reported missing.Deputies still were searching for
him Saturday, looking for evidence at the landfill and investigating
family members. No suspects have been named.D'Evelyn said there
are custodial issues involving the boy, his adoptive family and the
boy's biological mother, and some of them have taken lie-detector tests.
He did not know the results of those tests. He said the
possibility that a wild animal may have gotten to Sylar was ruled out
after a tracker with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service searched the
area surrounding the campground, found no evidence of large predatory
animals and said that such an attack would have left a lot of blood
behind.Searchers, with the help of bloodhounds, aircraft and
sonar gear, have conducted repeated grid searches of the campground, a
rough area with lots of brush and rocks and some nearby waterways."It's been a tough go," D'Evelyn said. "The frustration is just not being able to find this little boy."

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Attempts to locate missing 2-year-old Sylar Newton will continue unabated throughout the weekend.
Some case updates –
Following initial reports of the missing boy, YCSO detectives
contacted nearby land fill and trash dumping facilities asking for
cooperation to contain waste materials removed from the Beaver Creek
Campground and surrounding area. The major landfill receiving these
materials is located in the 23000 block of Highway 169, Dewey, and is
know as the Gray Wolf Landfill. Managers at the location were able to
identify several waste loads from the area and isolate those materials
for a search. This past week, a crew of YCSO personnel, assisted by FBI
agents and forensic specialists, combed through over 200 tons of waste
material at the site. The goal was to look for any evidence linked to
this case that could play a role helping investigators locate Sylar.
Although no critical information was immediately discovered, this effort
will continue as additional loads are isolated.
Investigators continue to receive assistance from various agencies
including the FBI, Arizona Department of Corrections and Parole,
Department of Public Safety, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, US
Forestry Service, Arizona Fish and Game Department, Yavapai County
Attorney’s Office, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited
Children. The FBI has also provided specialized equipment in conjunction
with YCSO resources including aircraft and sonar gear to examine bodies
of water. FBI agents having expertise with missing children cases are
also assisting YCSO detectives.
The campground will remain secure so searchers and investigators can
maintain scene integrity as they continue to look for Sylar and any
critical evidence. Detectives have begun to canvass surrounding
campground/community areas with Sylar’s missing person flyer in an
attempt to locate anyone who may be unaware of the incident and have
information about the missing boy.
Sheriff Steve Waugh and his Command staff remain fully briefed on the
agency effort to locate Sylar. The search operation is evaluated day to
day as decisions are made on where best to allocate current resources.
Although scaled back slightly in some areas, the work at Beaver Creek
Campground will likely continue through this weekend. Further details
regarding the areas covered by search crews will be available early next
week.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Two 911 calls were made, YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn explains,
"The Sedona Fire District received this call just before 2AM on July 25.
Following transfer to YCSO, the call was lost. The caller is a minor
child and friend of the missing person’s family.
"The camp host call to YCSO came in around 2:30 AM. The host’s name
and phone number have been redacted from the recording. Deputies arrived
on scene just before 3AM Sunday as a result of this call."

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
I more than understand that the adults were in a panic but, to have a minor call 911 in this situation is a major mistake, precious minutes were lost. Also on the 2nd call, the "host" should've known what site this boy went missing from, he really should've had a lot more info before calling. I understand it's a panic situation but there should've been at least one cool head that prevailed.
Something about this whole case just isn't sitting right with me, something's fishy but, haven't quite figured it out yet.

Boy, that's for sure Kiwi (by the way were almost halfway to Waitangi Day).
Still, doesn't the bio-mom live many hours away. I believe she had/has an alibi.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Yes the bio mom has an alibi and according to her she was happy he was with the other family so it sounds like the issues may have been the custodial moms. Maybe about money? Did they have some arrangement about money for the child or claiming on taxes or whatever. Maybe the custodial mom got pi$$ed off?TomTerrific0420 wrote:The report indicates that custodial issues existed between the boy’s adoptive family and his biological mother. This is different to what we heard at first.

Poster's Note: Despite some reports that there is/was animosity between these two it seems they are working together in the search.
The birth mother of a missing 2-year-old boy has made her way to northern Arizona to find her son. "I can't sit around and do nothing," said Charity Newton Sunday afternoon. "I'll just do the best I can." Newton got to town late Saturday night and spent Sunday posting fliers with pictures of her son Sylar around town. She
is teaming up with Sylar's adoptive mother Christina Priem, who was
with Sylar when he went missing from a northern Arizona campground last
weekend. "It's good moral support having her (Priem) around," Newton said. Both women say they will hit several communities in the area over the next couple of days. Sylar
was last seen in a tent at the Beaver Creek Campground early morning
hours of Sunday, July 25th. Search crews with dozens of people canvassed
the campground for days and for miles and turned up nothing. "I
think someone took him, that's really what I think," said Newton, who
admits she has no idea what happened. "No one is really telling me
anything." Newton says she and Priem had an official's temporary
custody agreement between them. Sylar would live with one for part of
the year and then with the other. "My best hope is that he is alive. That is my best hope right there."
