The 2-year-old boy who vanished from a campground near Sedona in July
and is presumed dead may have ingested drugs and been physically abused
on the day he disappeared, new court records show.
Search warrants in the case include statements taken from
Sylar Newton's custodial mother Christina Priem, and her mother, Nancy
Collins.Documents show Collins admitted to smoking marijuana on July 24, the
day Sylar was last seen alive. Collins also told deputies Sylar got
into her purse and swallowed a prescription muscle relaxant. Priem's
11-year-old daughter told detectives she could not wake up Sylar later
that day. Drowsiness is a listed side effect of the medication.
Both Priem and Collins told detectives they each took methadone on a
regular basis. The drug is commonly prescribed to people attempting to
overcome heroin addictions.
In the court records, detectives stated they believe Sylar was
physically abused hours before his disappearance. Campers at a nearby
campsite told authorities they saw either Priem or Collins push Sylar to
the ground because he could not find his shoes. Witnesses also said
they heard one of them being verbally abusive to the child.
That evening, other campers told detectives they heard Sylar crying for two hours.
On July 25, Priem told detectives she woke up at about 2 a.m. and
discovered Sylar was missing from their tent. Priem called 911.
Deputies and volunteers searched extensively for several days but failed to locate the boy.
Sylar's biological mother, Charity Newton, who gave Priem custody
said she had not heard some of these new details and feels betrayed.
"I blame her 100 percent," Newton said. "She was trusted to take care of my son and obviously didn't."
Yavapai County Sheriff's detectives believe human remains found last
week near the Beaver Creek Campground are those of Sylar Newton. They
are investigating his disappearance as a criminal case.
The Yavapai County Medical Examiner has not yet identified the remains found.
Sheriff's detectives have served search warrants on the Flagstaff
homes of Priem and Collins looking for various types of evidence as part
of the ongoing investigation.
No arrests have been made.

Sylar Newton abused before disappearance, witnesses say
by Stephanie Russo - Aug. 21, 2010 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
A search warrant released Friday shed light on the hours before the disappearance of a 2-year-old Flagstaff boy whose body authorities believe was found in a wash weeks after he went missing.
Sylar Newton went missing the night of July 24 from Beaver Creek Campground, near the community of Rimrock.
Authorities conducting a criminal investigation say that skeletal remains found in a ravine about 2 miles from the campground are Sylar's and that someone tried to hide the body. A medical examiner has yet to make a final determination on the identity.
Judge Mary Hamm of Seligman Justice Court signed a warrant July 25 allowing the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office to search property belonging to Sylar's custodial mother, Christina Priem, and her mother, Nancy Collins.
Priem and Collins had been visiting the campsite with Sylar, Priem's son and daughter, and a 14-year-old family friend.
The search warrant said campers reported seeing either Priem or Collins be "verbally abusive" to the boy and "push Sylar to the ground because he could not find his shoes." Campers also told investigators they heard the child crying between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. but could not hear anything after.
Priem's daughter, 11, told detectives that earlier in the afternoon, she saw Sylar staggering and then could not wake him, the warrant said.
Records indicate the family friend told detectives he heard Sylar had got into Collins' lockbox and ingested a muscle relaxant. Collins told detectives she knew of another time when Sylar had ingested her medication. She said her lockbox was kept in her car, but other family members told detectives it could have been in the tent.
Collins admitted to smoking pot the same day Sylar went missing, the search warrant showed.
Records sent to the Sheriff's Office by Flagstaff Police Department revealed that "both mother and grandmother have an extensive history with the police involving drugs, assault, child abuse and child neglect."
No one has been named as a suspect, and a reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in Sylar's death. Anyone with information can contact Yavapai Silent Witness at 800-932-3232.

Did you know she had one newborn that tested positive for pot?? Cool mom huh--NOT!! Have you checked out the Sylar Newton FB pages? She's an admin on them and they are taking donations to help with the funeral and headstone. I see nothing wrong if people want to donate but, they are all but begging, it's nuts. Nope, poor Sylar didn't stand a chance from the git-go, it wasn't only "mom" that let him down but, LE did too--they knew the history of the custodial mom and her mother. Makes me sick, children are not disposable!!

RIMROCK , Ariz -- Police released the 911 call made by Don Newton, a distant relative of missing 2-year-old Sylar Newton, after he discovered a child's remains.
"I have been looking for him since this happened," said Newton, who found the remains about a mile away from where the child went missing at the Beaver Creek Campground.
Newton said he didn't know it before but recently found out he is actually a distant cousin of the missing boy.
The 911 operator asked Newton for his name, and then asked if he was family.
"No, distant relative," Newton replied. "I've never even met him."
The Medical Examiner's Office is working with a forensic anthropologist to help identify the remains; however, Newton said on the tape he is sure the remains are Sylar's.

I don't think so Ovie. He seemed like a genuine guy to me when I watched his interview. He didn't know he was related when he first started looking and didn't know them. He was just determined to find him and the buzzards led him to the spot.

Nope, he wasn't tipped off. In fact, a couple times he wanted to quit because he couldn't think of anywhere else to look. He was out most mornings looking as soon as the sun come up, and the first week, he searched pretty much all day everyday. We chatted a lot on facebook, that's how I know. There were days he was real down, he has a grandson and said he just couldn't imagine if something like this happened to him and nobody kept looking. There were sheriff's around most of the time he searched and he would let them know where he'd been and what he'd seen, it wasn't until late in the game he found out they were related and he found that out by accident.
He's a big-time hunter/sportsman and that's why he thought of following the birds. He's having a very, very hard time with this, said he wanted the "little man" found but he wasn't prepared for what he saw, it's really giving him a bad time. No, he hasn't said what he saw or anything like that, and I don't want to know but, he can't talk about it right now anyways, he's a witness now.
Ok, just wanted to clear that up for ya'. :O)

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Still have not gotten a positive ID for baby Sylar from the coroner yet and he hasn't been released to his mother for burial. Seems that the FBI and local LE are checking into all the donations being taken and asked for. Some supporters are questioning where all the donations are going since the funeral/cremation have been donated and, a headstone was donated but the mom didn't like it, it's too big for where she wants it to go. Anyhow, some peeps contacted LE because they don't feel they've been getting a straight answer for where the money is going.
Pretty damn sad that a precious child has lost his life because neither his "custodial" mom or bio-mom knew how to take care of and love him but, the bio-mom can come out on facebook now and talk until the cows come home about how much she loved Sylar and thought he was safe--DUH! Don't know where she came up with that conclusion since she knew the custodial mom is a partier.
Anyhow, just thought I would fill you all in on what's going on in Sylar's case.

Thanks for the update neighbor!
I expect that if there was any body tissue left they would be running tox screens (they take awhile for results) to see if he indeed did ingest some illegals from Mommy's drug cache. More than likely she pulled an "Eraser" and gave him the pills to get him to calm down and go to sleep.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
The devastation drags on for family members waiting for closure in the case of two-year-old Sylar Newton, who vanished near Rimrock on July 25th. He had been camping with his custodial mother, Christina Priem; along with Christina's mother, her two biological children and one of their friends. Priem says she went to sleep with Sylar by her side, but when she woke up the tent was unzipped, and the boy was gone.
Crews worked around the clock for weeks on a search that spanned nearly 20 square miles. Then, on August 2nd, the case turned criminal. Searchers scaled back rescue efforts and shifted to a recovery mission.
Another week went by, and as time passed, hope diminished. Sylar's distant cousin, Donnie Newton, remained steadfast in his own search. As a skilled tracker and hunter, Donnie said he followed birds to something he feared he would find, but hoped he wouldn't see. With a weak voice, Newton described his gruesome discovery in a river bed, "I started up the bottom. Pretty quick I smelled it, and I seen him."
What he saw, were a child's remains scattered about, and believed to be the boy's. "I'm going to see that boy for a long time in my dreams, I have a feeling." He added, "God help little Sylar. I hope justice comes quick."
The journey to find justice has been anything but quick. While the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office seems confident the boy was killed, no arrests have been made.
So, what's the holdup? A cause of death has not yet been determined, and the remains have not been positively identified. The Yavapai County medical examiner's office is running toxicology and DNA tests, which can take weeks, even months.
The investigation into what really happened to Sylar is filled with twists and turns. Custodial concerns come to question. Like why did Christina Priem have him in the first place, since she's not his biological mom?
On St. Patrick's Day of 2008, Sylar was born to Charity Newton, who now lives in Indiana. It was a time, she said, when her life was laden with turmoil. "I was going through a really rough time myself. I had post partum really bad," she added.
At just two weeks, Sylar was abruptly handed off to three sisters; Diana Collins, Sandra Shoemake and Christina Priem. Collins looked after Sylar for two months, who was subsequently passed along to Sandra Shoemake, Charity's former roommate and friend.
"I eventually told [Christina] that I think the best thing for him is that she adopt him. I wanted him to be with somebody that he knew. She knew him, she loved him, he loved her, and I just wanted what was best for my son," said Charity Newton. She said they discussed adoption, but the paperwork was never filed.
Now, Priem's character comes into question.
Christina's ex-husband, Wayne Priem, says his ex-wife's erratic behavior weighed on his mind long before she took Sylar and their two kids camping. "Things would go from a normal type of countenance to a very disturbed upset countenance, and that happened frequently,"
He claims neglect was the catalyst for his call to Child Protective Services this winter. "The baby at this time [who] is now presumed dead, was in the car alone," he said. Wayne Priem said it wasn't an initial concern, until a relative called him a few hours later. "They said there was fighting going on between my ex and her relatives, and the child was outside in the car crying."
CPS will not comment during an active criminal investigation, but Wayne said it wasn't the first red flag he raised with them. In fact, he claimed to have called the agency a year and a half ago because of concerns about drug use around the children.
While Christina has chosen not to comment on these accusations, Sheriff's documents show she and her mother admitted to taking Methodone on the camping trip.
Wayne Priem added, "The kids are in danger and have been in danger because of her lifestyle, especially as of recently." Wayne said that's when a dark truth came to light.
"I did ask [my children] if or what had happened to them, and I was always given excuses. I have since found out those excuses were a cover up," said Priem. According to court documents, an FBI employee said she believed Christina Priem physically and mentally abused her own children. There were concerns that leaving the children in her care, could put them at risk of suffering continued harm.
Following allegations of abuse and accusations of drug use, Wayne Priem was granted emergency temporary custody of the couple's two children on August 13th.
Sheriff's documents show the adults may not have been the only ones doing drugs on the camping trip. During an interview with officials, Christina Priem said Sylar may have ingested at least part of a sleeping pill. Another peculiar part of the documents? One of the children said Sylar could not be woken up the afternoon before he disappeared. Questions still to be answered including what really happened to Sylar on July 25th, and how long will the search for justice will drag on.

RIMROCK - DNA tests have confirmed that remains discovered near an Arizona campsite are those of a 2 year-old boy.The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office made the announcement Monday.Sylar Newton was camping with his custodial mother and her family in July when they reported that he wandered away. A search turned up no sign of him.Investigators later said they believed that Sylar was taken from the area and feared dead. His remains were found weeks later at the bottom of a wash near the campsite.Authorities say the results of toxicology tests are pending. Witnesses at the campground told detectives that Sylar appeared to be under the influence of drugs or medication.Authorities are offering an $8,000 reward for information in the case.

The custodial mother of an Arizona toddler who was found dead in a wash this summer, weeks after his family reported him missing from a campsite, was arrested Monday on suspicion of child abuse. However, it was unclear if the charges involved the boy who died or some other child.Yavapai County sheriff's officials arrested Christina Priem, 36, at a Flagstaff auto parts store. She faces three felony counts of involving a minor in a drug offense.Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn couldn't say which child or children the three counts refer to, or when and where the alleged offenses occurred."They (deputies) want to talk to her and clear up some of the things they're working on," he said. "They had probable cause to justify the arrest on these counts."It was unknown Monday if Priem had an attorney. The arrest stems from an investigation into the disappearance and death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton. The boy was camping with Priem and her family near Rimrock in July when they reported that he wandered away from a tent and disappeared.Searchers walked up and down washes, and scoured a landfill, trash bins and other areas of the campsite for more than a week but could not find him.Weeks later, a distant relative of Sylar who lives in the area and had been looking for the boy called authorities to say he spotted something in the bottom of a wash near the campsite. DNA tests confirmed it was Sylar.Witnesses at the campground, about 40 miles south of Flagstaff, told detectives that Sylar appeared to be under the influence of drugs or medication. The results of toxicology tests are pending, D'Evelyn said.Sylar's biological mother, Charity Newton, was pregnant with Sylar when she met Priem through Priem's sister. Newton had intended to have Priem adopt Sylar. She told reporters on Monday that she is hopeful authorities will figure out exactly what happened to her son."They're continuing in the direction of bringing justice to my son, I know that," she said. "They've told me numerous times that they're not going to give up."Priem was being held at the Camp Verde Detention Center.

Christina Priem's Bond Set at $250K
snipped......
In a press release sent out yesterday afternoon by D'Evelyn, he explains, "Detectives have released further details regarding the criminal charges involving Priem. During the course of the investigation into Sylar’s death, detectives developed information that minor children under Priem’s care and control were exposed to illicit drugs. These incidents occurred during the time Priem and her family/friends, including Sylar, went camping at the Beaver Creek campground beginning Friday, July 23, 2010. Sylar was reported missing from the campground on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Although these charges do not pertain directly to Sylar, they result from an examination of activities at the campground which could lead to an understanding of Sylar’s disappearance and death. The circumstances surrounding the death of Sylar remain the primary focus of detectives as the investigation continues in earnest."
Priem's bond has been set at $250,000. She will appear in court again on December 14, 2010, for her Early Disposition hearing.

Detectives from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office have announced
additional charges as a result of the ongoing investigation into the
death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton. Today, detectives charged Christina
Priem with one count of Child Abuse when done intentionally or
knowingly. Her bond on this charge was set at $50,000. Priem’s total
bond amount is currently $300,000 on all charges. Detectives have also
announced a single charge of Child Abuse, when done recklessly, against
57-year-old Nancy Collins, Priem’s mother. The charges against Priem and
Collins relate directly to events leading to Sylar Newton’s death while
in their custody.
As of this afternoon, detectives have been unable to locate Collins
and are seeking her arrest for a Child Abuse warrant. Collins is a white
female about 5 feet in height. The attached driver’s license photo was
taken in September of this year. If anyone has knowledge as to the
whereabouts of Collins, please contact the Yavapai County Sheriff’s
Office, Detective John McDormett at 928-771-3260, or the law enforcement
agency where Collins is located. Those with information on Collins may
also call Yavapai Silent Witness at 1800-932-3232. Callers to Silent
Witness remain anonymous and become eligible for a reward if Collins is
arrested based on the tip.
Specific charging details have not been disclosed at this time.

Custodial grandmother of 2-year-old Arizona boy found dead, arrested
RIMROCK, Ariz. — The custodial grandmother of a 2-year-old boy found
dead this summer at a northern Arizona campground has been arrested on a
child abuse charge.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office announced that the
boy's custodial mother, Christina Priem, and his custodial grandmother,
Nancy Collins, would be charged with child abuse in the Sylar Newton
Case.
Priem, 36, was arrested Dec. 7 on three felony counts
of involving a minor in a drug offense, but none of those charges
involved the toddler's death.
After issuing a warrant on Thursday, Flagstaff police
officers found Collins, 57, at a Flagstaff area motel. The sheriff's
office said Collins also will be charged with felony drug violations but
did not release further details of her arrest.
A sheriff's office statement issued Thursday night said the charges
against Priem and Collins "relate directly to events leading to Sylar
Newton's death while in their custody."
The boy was found dead in a wash in August, weeks after his family reported him missing from a northern Arizona campsite.
Priem remains at the Camp Verde Detention Center on $300,000 bond.
It was unclear Saturday whether Priem or Collins had lawyers.
Sylar's biological mother, Charity Newton, said she
turned over care of the boy to Priem during a difficult time in her life
and had intended for Priem to adopt him.
Priem also has a son and a daughter. Sylar was camping
with Priem and her family near Rimrock in late July when they reported
that he wandered away from a tent and disappeared.
Searchers walked up and down washes, and scoured a
landfill, trash bins and other areas of the campsite for more than a
week but could not find him.
Weeks later, a distant relative of the toddler who
lives in the area and had been looking for the boy called authorities to
say he spotted something in the bottom of a wash near the campsite. DNA
tests confirmed it was Sylar.
Witnesses at the Beaver Creek Campground, about 40 miles south of
Flagstaff, told detectives that Sylar appeared to be under the influence
of drugs or medication. Sheriff's officials said the results of
toxicology tests still were pending.
Merry Christmas Sylar! The justice you so much deserve is on it's way, slowly but--this is a big step in the right direction. RIP sweet baby.

Re: SYLAR NEWTON - 2 yo (2010) - Camp Verde (S of Flagstaff) AZ
Christina Priem and her mother Nancy Collins were back in court with their
lawyers Tuesday morning, but the scheduled case management conference
was continued for two more months.
Both the 36-year-old Priem and 57-year-old Collins are charged with child abuse
in the death of Sylar Newton, the 2-year-old child Priem cared for.
Little Sylar disappeared overnight while the family was sleeping in the Beaver
Creek campground. A massive search was launched but the child's body
was not found for two more weeks.
Defense attorney Robert Gundacker, representing Priem, told Judge Tina Ainley
Tuesday "there is a lot of discovery but the redaction is complete."
The attorney had complained earlier that so many of the identities in the
report had been blacked out that it was difficult to follow the
narrative and the judge had ordered a non-redacted copy.
Gundacker said there is still more discovery ongoing.
Both he and Michael Shaw asked the court for a long continuance to review
the material and visit the Beaver Creek Campground pool where Sylar's body was found.
On the matter of whether additional time should be allowed for the trial process, the attorney
said, "absolutely ... it is a complex case."
Judge Ainley set the next appearance May 10 at 10:30 a.m.
Both women are jailed. Priem is held pending $300,000 bond on drug and child
abuse charges. Collins is held on $75,000 bond on the child abuse charge.
