Toddler’s death still unsettled: Investigators await toxicology results; autopsy inconclusive

ROCKFORD – Results of an autopsy of a 2-year-old Savanna boy were inconclusive and investigators are awaiting a toxicology report to help determine how he died, officials said Tuesday.
The toxicology report for Ashton J. Sistak may take 2 to 3 weeks, Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said.
The boy did not appear to have any outwardly visible injuries, Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran said.
Investigators still are trying to determine what happened to him, and won’t be able to determine whether foul play was involved until toxicology results are in, Doran said.
“At this point, we’re not treating this criminally, we’re just investigating,” he said.
Ashton is the son of Alexis M. Sistak, 28, and Mark W. Meador, 39.
The Sheriff’s Department was called at 8:30 a.m. Sunday to a house at 325 Wilson Ave. in Chadwick. The toddler was found unconscious and not breathing outside a blowup-type bouncy tent in the front yard.
The homeowner, Brandi Schleuning, 28, was baby-sitting the boy over the weekend. Her 2-year-old daughter told her “something was wrong with Ashton,” Doran said.
Doran did not know whether Schleuning took the boy out of the tent when she discovered him, or if he collapsed outside of the tent.
Ashton was taken to CGH Medical Center in Sterling and later airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital. He died at 12:15 p.m. Monday in the hospital’s pediatric center.
The sheriff’s department is working with the Chadwick Police Department, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which is involved in a case any time a child dies.
