NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News girl missing for more than three months may be in danger and police hope the public can help find her.

14-year-old Avril Smith was reported as a runaway on June 19. According to police, her parents recently received a phone call from her which led them to believe she was being held against her will. Then, the call quickly ended and her cell phone service was shut off.

Detectives have reason to believe Avril may be in the Virginia Beach area.

NEWPORT NEWS — The search for a missing 14-year-old Newport News girl has escalated after a recent phone call and text message.

When Avril Smith, called her mother a few weeks ago she was crying. The phone call lasted seconds. Her mother, Clara Smith, said she heard men's voices in the background — then the phone went dead. Next a text message was sent from the phone.

"She's not gonna call you back and you don't know who you are messing with," was what the text said according to Newport News police Det. Jeff Senter. As soon as the call ended the cell phone service was shut off, according to police.

Missing Newport News girl, feared to have been abducted, is located in Virginia Beach

NEWPORT NEWS — A 14-year-old girl from Newport News, missing since June and feared to have been abducted, was located this morning in Virginia Beach.

Police spokesman Harold Eley said a citizen's tip received on Crime Line on Monday morning reported the whereabouts of Avril Smith at a location in Virginia Beach. He said a detective "is en route to interview Miss Smith."

Smith has been missing since June 19, when she was reported as a runaway. Police say recent phone and text message communication had led her family to believe that she may have been abducted and held against her will.
There was no immediate indication regarding how Smith got to Virginia Beach.
