"Baby John" O'CONNOR-VASQUEZ - 5 Months - Daytona Beach FL
A Daytona Beach couple were arrested today after doctors found their 5-month-old son had a skull fracture, brain swelling, a healing leg fracture and eight broken ribs. The boy and has a 50 percent of surviving — at best with extreme neurological impairment, a doctor said. The baby was rushed to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach Wednesday with bruises on his head, neck, face, legs and torso, a police report states. He also had a broken femur — the thighbone — and ribs that were in various stages of healing, doctors told police. The couple delayed calling 911 for more than 13 hours while they slept and the father bicycled to a pawnshop, investigators said.Father Jack O'Connor, 21, and mother Gladys Vasquez, 22, told investigators the baby must have gotten hurt falling out of their bed, which is no more than 2 1/2 feet off the floor, according to the report. Doctors said the injuries couldn't have been caused by such a fall — only child abuse, a police report states. O'Connor told detectives he is unemployed and the primary caregiver for his son. Vasquez works at a movie theater. O'Connor also revealed that the state Department of Children and Families had previously investigated him because it was alleged that he took drugs while caring for the baby. A department spokesman said confidentiality laws prevent him from disclosing the result, although O'Connor admitted that he still smokes marijuana, the report says. On Sunday, the baby fell out of bed face down near a DVD player, investigators said he told them. The child then drank formula, spit up and slept through the night, failing to wake up for his normal feeding at 3 and 6 a.m., the father told police. On Monday morning, the baby had a seizure and his face was twitching, the father said. But instead of summoning medical help, O'Connor took the DVD player by bicycle to a pawnshop in Holly Hill, pawned the machine, then rode back to the apartment, according to the report. That was when he and Vasquez called 911. O'Connor attributed the healing femur fracture to a fall off the couch several weeks ago, while his girlfriend said it must have happened when she picked the infant up to change his diaper, the report states. They never sought medical help, police said. The baby's last visit to a doctor was in July. Nobody took him for a scheduled appointment on Sept. 13, officers said. One doctor said the injuries probably happened in the past two weeks. The doctor also told investigators that the baby would have been in extreme pain and wailing while he was being hurt. The child was transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. O'Connor and Vasquez were each arrested on a charge of aggravated child neglect causing great bodily harm and are being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail. The father told police that nobody other than he and his girlfriend had cared for the child. The Department of Children and Families is investigating.

Police: Abused Baby's Chances of Survival 50-50
Authorities Charge Parents In Connection With Injuries

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Daytona Beach baby has been hospitalized with eight fractured ribs, a skull fracture, brain swelling and bruises, according to authorities. Two people now face charges of aggravated child neglect in connection with the injuries.
According to Daytona Beach police, Gladys Vasquez and Jack O’Connor’s child was rushed to Halifax Hospital on Wednesday after a series of seizures. Hospital staff then contacted authorities due to the extent of the injuries.
Doctors told police the injuries could only have come through abuse.
Vasquez and O’Connor told police that the child had fallen off of the bed, according to the police report.
Police said O’Connor later told them that he did not initially call 911 when he believed the child was having a seizure.
Instead, O’Connor took at DVD player to a Holly Hill pawn shop to sell the item, and then rode home on his bike. The pair then decided to call 911, police said.
O’Connor told police that he had a history of using cannabis and Xanex, as well as anger and depression issues.
Hours after the child was taken to the hospital, police searched the pair’s residence and discovered the bed from which the two said the baby must have fallen from was no more than 2 1/2 feet off of the ground.
According to a doctor at Arnold Palmer Hospital, where the child was moved to, the baby has a 50 percent chance of survival. If he does survive, a doctor told police, he would have severe neurological deficiencies.
The doctor said the baby’s injuries must have caused “inconsolable crying” and “forced him to act out in agony.”

These 2 POS, scum of the earth need to spend the rest of their lives in prison for attempted murder. This poor baby was only 5 months old. If they didn't want him (well birth control would have been the best choice, but too late for that) they could have dropped him off at a hospital or fire station. This poor baby entered this world and was taken straight to the bowels of hell by these 2 monsters. Until laws get tough on these types of crimes against defenseless, little children we can only expect to find more of these stories in the news.

The parents of an infant who was so severely abused last year that he
is unable to talk, walk or sit up have each pleaded no contest to a
charge of principal to aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony
punishable by up to 30 years in prison, the State Attorney's Office
announced today.
Gladys Vasquez, 23, and Jack Ryan O'Connor, 22,
will be sentenced Jan. 24 by Circuit Judge Frank Marriott, spokeswoman
Klare Ly said. They are being held in the Volusia County Jail with bail
set at $20,000 each.
According to an arrest affidavit:
O'Connor and Vasquez both told Daytona Beach
police the baby —then 5 months old —was injured the evening of Oct. 12,
2010 when he fell off of a bed. O'Connor said he fed the baby and he
slept through the night, but the next morning was having a seizure.
Before
getting medical attention for the baby, O'Connor rode his bicycle to
Holly Hill to pawn a DVD player. When he returned to his home he awoke
Vasquez, his girlfriend, and they called 911. The baby was taken to
Halifax Health Medical Center and then transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.
When it was pointed out that the baby had fractures that were already
healing, O'Connor told officers the child had fallen off a sofa weeks
earlier but that he did not seek medical treatment because the injuries
seemed to be healing on their own.
The child suffered from scull fractures, swelling of the brain, bruises all over his body, a leg fracture that appeared to be an older injury and eight fractured ribs in various stages of healing.
Doctors told police the injuries could only have been caused by "deliberate child abuse."
They
also told police the baby suffered from a great deal of pain, both
while receiving the injuries and during the healing process.
O'Connor admitted to police that he used drugs while caring for his son.
Doctors
gave the child a 50 percent chance of surviving his injuries and said
if he did survive, he would suffer from severe neurological
deficiencies.
The child is being cared for in a foster home, Ly said.

It's not enough but it's better than the Casey. I hope their fellow inmates do to them what they did to their helpless little baby.

I hate to be mercenary at a time like this BUT this is why our taxes are so high.
We will, with sadness, pay for Medicaid care for the Baby for the rest of his life. Now we also have to pay for all of the room/board and all expenses for these two asshats for many more years.
Useless waste products who are a drain on society.

Yes Tom, you're right. The Medicaid expense will be quite high because the baby is almost a vegetable and will never be able to take care of himself.
I'm willing to pay to keep trashy POSs like this locked up. Sadly our prisons here are filled with drug abusers who serve much longer sentences than baby abusers.

I just want to know why these monsters only got 15 years. Why the heck didn't the judge sentence them to the full 30 years. Our judicial system is messed up.
