PREVIOUS STORY:

He was wearing a green John Deere baseball cap, a black or dark colored leather coat with possibly a black hoodie underneath and blue jeans.
He is approximately 5'4" and 115lbs.
Police are trying to follow up on a couple possible sightings of the teen but they say his cell phone is off now, so they cant use that to track his location.

Azizi is an exchange student from Afghanistan who has been living with a host family in Ohio. He's not a member of the FFA but he was here with a group who is.
Police have had search teams, including K-9s searching for Azizi downtown. The last time anybody saw him was around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, down on Monument Circle. He was doing some sightseeing with his group and then was supposed to go catch a bus.
"He was supposed to head back to around the convention center, I think the busses are leaving from there. His hotel is up in the area around 96th Street. It's up way near Carmel. When he didn't show up there is when we got the ball rolling and we started putting things in place to look for him," said IMPD Sgt. Linda Jackson.
Investigators are trying to follow up on a couple possible sightings including a Hardees restaurant at East Washington Street and Southeastern Avenue, where somebody said he may have been with somebody else.
Metro police say Azizi is highly intelligent. There is no Amber Alert due to the fact that police aren't sure if Azizi is in any kind of danger. His host family is expected to arrive in Indianapolis Friday.
If you see him or have any information about his disappearance or whereabouts, you're asked to call police.
Statement from The National FFA organization:
The National FFA Organization is working in full cooperation with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Missing Persons Branch to locate 15-year-old Mohammed “Karim” Azizi, an Afghani foreign exchange student who got separated from his Ohio hosts after the FFA convention activities last night.
“Obviously, our first thoughts are toward locating this young man, who is a visitor to Indianapolis and to FFA,” said FFA Chief Operating Officer Dwight Armstrong. “We are contacting all our advisors and will continue to assist IMPD in any way we can.”
Anyone with information on Karim Azizi is asked to contact the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department at 911.

Indianapolis Metro Police are searching for a 15-year-old exchange student who is in the Circle City for the annual FFA Convention.

Mohammed 'Karim' Azizi is an exchange student from Afghanistan who has been living with a host family in Forest, Ohio. Although Azizi is not an FFA member, he was in town with a group of students who are.

Azizi is about 5' 4'', weighing about 115 lbs. He was last seen on Monument Circle around 8:45 Thursday night wearing a green John Deere hat, a black leather jacket, possibly with a black hoodie underneath and blue jeans.

Police say Azizi's group had done some sightseeing on the Circle before going to the Convention Center to catch a bus to their hotel near 96th and Meridian. But Azizi never got on the bus.
Overnight, police were tracking Azizi's cellphone signal until the phone either died or was turned off.

There have been a couple possible sightings, including one at a Hardees restaurant near East Washington and Southeastern Avenue.

K9 units tried to pick up the teen's trail on the circle, but weren't able to track him far. There is no AMBER Alert because police do not have any information to suggest that Azizi is in immediate danger from anyone.

Friends tell police this is out of character for Azizi, who is described as highly intelligent.

In a statement, the National FFA Organization said it is "working in full cooperation" with IMPD and the Missing Persons Branch to locate Azizi.

“Obviously, our first thoughts are toward locating this young man, who is a visitor to Indianapolis and to FFA,” said FFA Chief Operating Officer Dwight Armstrong. “We are contacting all our advisors and will continue to assist IMPD in any way we can.”

If anyone sees Azizi, you're asked to call 911.

U.S. State Department officials say a 15-year-old Afghani exchange student is the latest of more than 50 exchange students now missing and unaccounted for in this country. But local authorities believe the teen plotted nothing more than his escape.Mohhamed Karim Azizi has been gone four days, without a trace. The disappearance of the Afghani exchange student last Thursday from Monument Circle after attending the FFA convention with a group from Ohio has his host family, authorities and the State Department baffled."He could still be in Indiana. We just don't know at this point, so there's a lot of investigation still going on," said IMPD Lt. Jeff Duhamell."We hope he turns up safe and [we can] return him to his parents. I know they're very worried about him," said Marthena Cowart, Senior Advisor for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.According to Cowart, Karim came to the U.S. two months ago as part of the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program, or "YES" program for short. It's named after its Senate sponsors, the late Edward Kennedy and Indiana's Dick Lugar. After 9-11, the State Department launched the program to allow 15-, 16- and 17-year olds from large Muslim populations to live with host families and study in the United States for a year and to learn about America. This year, there are 963 student participants."Approximately 51 Afghan students out of a total of 254, which includes the 24 currently in the United States this academic year, have left the program early and, to the bureau's knowledge, have not returned home to Afghanistan," Cowart told Eyewitness News.According to the State Department, homesick students have 24-hour access to program workers that can help them leave if they choose to go home. That's why officials believe Karim's disappearance was planned.Metro police did confiscate a chemistry notebook and turned it over to the Indiana Homeland Security Fusion Center for analysis. A state police spokesman says investigators couldn't read the foreign handwriting and needed an interpreter. The results, they say, turned up nothing of consequence."There's no indication at this point of any type of terrorist movement or anything of that nature. Where he's going, we just don't know," said Lt. Duhamell.Karim Azizi was last seen wearing a dark green John Deere baseball cap, a black hoodie and blue jeans. He's about 5'4" tall and weighs 115 pounds.Anyone with information is asked to contact IMPD. State Department officials say once Azizi is located, he will be returned to Afghanistan.

A missing 15-year-old foreign exchange student from Afghanistan may have defected to Canada, police said.Mohammed Karim Azizi, from Kabul, was with a group of students from his exchange high school in Ohio who were visiting Indianapolis for the National FFA Convention when he was last seen Thursday night on Monument Circle.Indianapolis missing persons detectives say that World Links, the group that arranged Azizi's exchange program, said they believe Azizi has defected to Canada.
Since 2004, the group said it has had 40 Afghan exchange students leave the United States for Canada."Under Canadian law, if he gets up there, then he can claim political asylum," said Capt. David Allender. "And if he goes to Canada, he'll enter it legally. He has his passport."World Links said that by attaining Canadian citizenship, the teen would be able to bring the rest of his family into the country, including his father, a shopkeeper, and seven siblings.Investigators said that the boy had premeditated his disappearance, having cleaned out his locker at his Ohio school before leaving. He had also turned off his cell phone, which cut off a key method police could have used to track him.His host family told police they had no inkling that anything was bothering Azizi, who had been in the country for about two months."We found some writings, a mixture of Arabic and English, and had them translated. They were just general writings that indicated he might be homesick," Allender said.Under Indiana law, because Azizi is under 18, he is not considered to have committed a crime and is classified as an endangered child."We have no indication that he's involved in anything criminal. He's just a 15-year-old out there with no visible support group, and that concerns us," Allender said.Azizi is about 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 115 pounds. He was wearing a black leather coat with a fur collar, a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. He was also wearing a green John Deere baseball cap.
