Autopsy on Amber Alert teen to be performed today
Autopsies are scheduled this morning to determine the cause of death of two people found in a cemetery Wednesday night.
The bodies of Taylor E. Manley, 15, and Raymond R. Bush, 38, both were found in Bush’s minivan parked in St. Charles Cemetery, on North Dixie Highway in Newport, according to Michigan State Police. An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday for the teenage girl who had been living with her father in Evart, which is southeast of Cadillac, police said.
The father came home from work Wednesday morning around 7:30 and the teen was not there, Michigan State Police Sgt. Joe Cairnduff said.
Bush and Manley were acquaintances, but the exact relationship between the two is still being investigated, he said.
The 38-year-old man had a tattoo on the back of his neck with her name on it, Cairnduff said.
Bush had a court date Wednesday in Clare County and the teen was supposed to be involved in that court date, he said. There was some fear he might have been attempting to prevent her from attending that hearing and an Amber Alert was issued, he said.
Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said that Bush was scheduled to appear in 80th District Court in Harrison. He never showed Wednesday to face a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge from Aug. 22 for a sexual relationship with Taylor Manley, 15.
She was to be in court as the main witness against him.
Ambrozaitis said she got a call from Manley's father around 8 a.m. Wednesday saying his daughter went missing the night before.Ambrozaitis said Bush was a family friend of Manley and her mother when they had lived in Monroe County at some point. He stayed friends and would visit.
"At some point after they moved up here, the relationship turned sexual and the mom reported it to police" one she learned about it, Ambrozaitis said.
Michigan's age of consent for sexual relations is 16."There is no consent in this," Ambrozaitis said. "She's not of an age where she can give consent."
Bush's bond was forfeited Wednesday and a bench warrant issued for him.
"I met with the young woman the day before she disappeared," Ambrozaitis said. "It's devastating. I was absolutely sick when I got the call."
1st Lt. Mary Kapp, commander of the state police Monroe District Post, said the bodies were found when police, acting on a tip, found the van around 5:00 p.m. A SWAT team was called in but officers found the two dead, she said, and there was never a standoff situation.
Bush is from the Monroe area, she said.
Police are not saying how the two may have died or who they believe is responsible for the deaths.
The FBI is assisting with the investigation.

Harrison, Evart school districts react in wake of Amber Alert teen's death
Thursday, October 28, 2010, 11:25 AM
HARRISON — In the wake of a 15-year-old student's death, two central-Michigan school districts are offering crisis support counselors for students, faculty and family.
Taylor E. Manley, of Evart, formerly of Harrison, was found dead Wednesday night, alongside her abductor, Raymond R. Bush of Newport, who allegedly had taken his own life. WXYZ, in Detroit, is reporting that investigators said the teen had been shot in the chest.
Taylor has three siblings in the Harrison Community Schools district — one at Harrison High School, one at Hillside Elementary and one at Larson Elementary. Superintendent Tom House and his faculty met with a crisis response team this morning.
"The appropriate support and counseling is available for student and staff," said House.
That counseling is already under way.
Superintendent of Evart Public Schools Howard Hyde said Manley was only enrolled at the school for about one week. He released the following statement:
Clare County Sheriff John Wilson tells The Associated Press that Bush had been scheduled to appear Wednesday in 80th District Court, where he was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Wilson says an arrest warrant was issued after Bush failed to appear.

Re: TAYLOR EILEEN MANLEY - 15 yo - Harrison/Evart (NW of Saginaw) MI
A heartbreaking end to a statewide Amber Alert for this Osceola County teenager.
Police are still trying to put the pieces together after discovering the bodies of 15-year-old Taylor Manley and her kidnapper. Now, medical examiners confirm their murder suicide theory.
Police issued the Amber Alert Wednesday morning after Taylor was taken from her father's home near Evart. After a day long search, troopers found her and Raymond Bush dead inside his van Wednesday night in a cemetery near Detroit. Autopsies showed Bush died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound, and Taylor was shot multiple times.
Taylor and Bush had known each other for awhile. Back in September, Bush was charged with sexually assaulting Taylor. Yesterday morning, she was supposed to testify against him, but neither one ever made it to court.
Many people Northern Michigan's News Leader spoke with remember Taylor as a loving girl, who enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and four-wheeling. Her family says funeral arrangements are still being made.

Re: TAYLOR EILEEN MANLEY - 15 yo - Harrison/Evart (NW of Saginaw) MI
A frantic, day-long search for Taylor Eileen Manley, 15, began with the discovery of a broken-down door in northern Michigan and ended in tragedy nearly 200 miles away when police found her body in a minivan in a Monroe County cemetery. In between, police learned that Raymond Robert Bush, 38, her alleged abductor and killer, had missed a Wednesday court appearance at which he was scheduled to face a charge of having sexual contact with Taylor.Police now believe Bush shot Taylor in the head long before he took his own life in the cemetery, where police found his minivan about 7 p.m. Wednesday. "It's a shock," said Michelle Ambrozaitis, the Clare County prosecutor who hoped to put Bush in prison for having sex with Taylor, starting when she was 14. "I don't think you can ever get used to the mean, awful things that people do to each other." Both Taylor and Bush were expected to appear in a Clare County courtroom where the girl was going to be the main witness, testifying against Bush during his preliminary hearing. If convicted of the third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge, he faced 15 years in prison. Instead of facing her in court, police now believe Bush went to Evart, broke down a door of her home and swept her away. Ambrozaitis said Taylor was willing to testify and had told her as recently as Tuesday that Bush was violating terms of his bond by calling her on her cell phone. "She didn't want contact with him and didn't want anything to do with him," she said. Joseph Manley said his granddaughter — an active teen who loved to hunt, fish, ride a skateboard and drive a four-wheeler, likely did not want to go with Bush. "I know she wouldn't have (gone willingly)," he said. Authorities were first notified about Taylor's disappearance when her father came home after working the night shift and found his daughter missing about 8 a.m. That set off an "Amber alert" and a statewide search for Taylor as well as for Bush, who had the name "Taylor" tattooed on the back of his neck. As they looked across the state, police learned that Bush contacted a former girlfriend in Monroe County in the late morning and told her that he had already killed Taylor. He said he was planning on dumping her body in the woods and indicated he was going to kill himself. Later, he showed up at the ex-girlfriend's home, and she told police she saw a body in the back of the van. "I know she (the girlfriend) was pretty well shaken," said Detective Sgt. George Pratt of the State Police post in Reed City. After Bush left, she quickly called police, who soon found the van parked in the St. Charles Cemetery on North Dixie Highway in Newport. After surrounding the vehicle with officers, they moved in before 11 p.m. and found Bush dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Pratt said. State Police First Lt. Mary Kapp of the Monroe post said preliminary autopsy results indicate a murder-suicide. Taylor was shot once in the chest and once in the head with a 22-caliber handgun, and Bush died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, Kapp said. Bush had befriended the Manley family in Monroe County and had visited them in Clare County over the past year, Ambrozaitis said. He bought Taylor gifts and did things for her that her parents could not afford. That led to a sexual relationship that by law is illegal — the age of consent is 16. "A 38-year-old should know better than to get involved with a 15-year-old," the prosecutor said. Ambrozaitis described Taylor as a "spunky young woman who had a lot of promise," and her grandfather said she loved to joke around and play sports like basketball. "She was normally a very happy-go-lucky person," he said. Joseph Manley said he was in "disbelief" when his son Robert called with the news that Taylor had been taken. Taylor had recently moved to Evart and was attending an alternative high school there. Joseph Manley said she chose to move in with her father after living with her mother for several years in Harrison. "She wanted a change," he said.

Teri Nunn, who is the mother of Mr. Bush's 11-year-old son, said he called her from his cell phone about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. She said he confessed to shooting Taylor in the chest and head while they were driving to Monroe County from her Reed City, Mich. home, more than 170 miles away.
"He said he shot her in the heart but it didn't kill her. He said he didn't want to see her suffer so he went back and shot her in the head," Ms. Nunn said.
Ms. Nunn said she called authorities to alert them to the crime and police detectives went to her workplace, where they interviewed her about what Mr. Bush had told her.
Taylor Eileen Manley was the subject of an Amber Alert Wednesday, and it was feared she had been abducted by Mr. Bush, 38, who was living in Newport.
On Wednesday, a charge of aggravated stalking was filed against Mr. Bush and involving Taylor in Osceola County District Court, records show.
Lt. Mary Kapp of the Michigan State Police said Thursday afternoon that an autopsy showed Taylor died of one gunshot wound to the chest and another to the head. Bush died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities said a .22-caliber gun was used.
They are treating the case as a murder-suicide.
Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said on Aug. 22, she filed one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct against Mr. Bush, alleging he had sexual intercourse with a person aged 13 to 15, specifically Taylor.
Mr. Bush posted 10 percent of a $50,000 bond and was released from jail on the condition that he have no contact with Taylor.
Ms. Ambrozaitis said she met with Taylor a week ago to go over her testimony for a preliminary examination that was scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday.
"She was upbeat. She was just how she normally is," the prosecutor said. "She makes me laugh because she has that attitude about her. She was on board about testifying against him and never gave us any indication she wasn't on board with that."
She said Taylor and her father met with her again Tuesday "because the defendant was calling her cell phone and sending her text messages."
Ms. Ambrozaitis said that after meeting, she forwarded information to the Osceola County Prosecutor regarding Mr. Bush's repeated attempts to contact Taylor, who had been staying with in that county with her father.
Ms. Ambrozaitis said she filed a motion to revoke his bond.
"I intended to argue that his bond be raised after the preliminary examination was held the following morning," she said.
It would turn out to be too late.
Ms. Ambrozaitis said she never imagined Mr. Bush would hurt Taylor. He had never threatened her, and she had not expressed fear about him. She also believes their relationship began consensually, but that changed after her mother found out and brought her to the police department to report it.
"Basically she said she wanted him to stop having contact with her. She didn't want to have contact with him. She didn't want to talk to him," the prosecutor said. "He was holding some of her personal belongings, and she was concerned about getting them back."
Ms. Ambrozaitis said Mr. Bush had purchased gifts for Taylor, had tattooed her name across his back, and had engaged in other behavior she considered "predatory."
"Clearly you have to wonder what possesses a normal 38-year-old man to want to have a relationship with a 15-year-old," she said.
Mr. Bush's minivan was found by a Michigan State Police trooper in the cemetery in Berlin Township, north of Monroe about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.
They say they entered the vehicle and found the pair dead inside.
About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Ms. Nunn was driving home, she encountered Mr. Bush's mini-van on North Dixie Highway, about one mile from her home.
She said they both pulled into a convenience store parking lot, where she got out of her vehicle and approached Mr. Bush in his van.
She said he told her that he had left some personal belongings in the garage of her home for her to give to their son. She said she looked inside the minivan and saw Taylor's body that was partially covered with a blanket on the floor behind the driver's seat.
Ms. Nunn said Mr. Bush said he and the girl had made a pact to die together in a murder-suicide.
"He said he asked her to shoot him first, but she didn't want to shoot him because she was afraid she would back out of it."

Re: TAYLOR EILEEN MANLEY - 15 yo - Harrison/Evart (NW of Saginaw) MI
Taylor Manley, 15, spoke with her dad before he took off for work Tuesday night about her big day Wednesday.
She was supposed to be out of bed when he got home from an overnight shift and ready to go to court to testify. The teen planned to miss school that day to be the main witness against Raymond Bush, 38, who faced a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct for a relationship with her. When Robert Manley arrived at his Evart home in Osceola County around 7:30 a.m., his daughter was gone. He knew something was wrong and immediately called authorities, prompting an Amber Alert to be issued for the teen.Taylor and Bush were found dead in the back of Bush's blue Dodge Caravan parked in a Monroe County cemetery. She had been shot twice, once in the head and once in the chest, and Bush died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an apparent murder-suicide, police said."She was afraid of him," Robert Manley said of Bush, who had Taylor's name tattooed near his lower neck. Taylor told her dad that Bush had threatened in the past that he would "do something" if she planned to testify.
A desperate man, a fearful teen
Raymond Bush's troubles were closing in on him.Unemployed, broke and about to lose his apartment, the 38-year-old Newport man faced an even more serious matter: a sex-assault charge that relatives said spooked him. He had been involved intimately with 15-year-old Taylor Manley, a northern Michigan girl whose mother notified authorities when she learned about the sexual relationship that, if true, is statutory rape."He didn't know what he was going to do next," his stepmother, Maryann Bush, said Thursday. "He was just afraid of when he had to go to court, what would happen to him, because he's never been in a situation like that."Bush threatened Taylor about testifying and told her that he would rather run than face the charge, the girl's father said. Now police are investigating whether Bush snatched Taylor out of her father's Osceola County home sometime early Wednesday and drove downstate, shooting her to death before turning a .22-caliber pistol on himself.Glimpses into Bush's growing desperation emerged Thursday as police investigated the discovery of their bodies the day before in the St. Charles Cemetery on Dixie Highway in Newport in Monroe County. Michigan State Police said the bodies were in the back of a minivan parked near the graves of Bush's grandparents, who raised him.Taylor was shot in the head and chest and Bush once in the head, police said. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Taylor's death a homicide and Bush's a suicide.Police still were examining details of the shootings.Taylor's grandfather, Joseph Manley of Farwell, said investigators told the family that there were signs a door to the mobile home where she lived with her father in Evart had been pried open, indicating she was abducted, and that several hours may have elapsed between her death and Bush's suicide. Both Taylor and Bush were supposed to appear Wednesday in 80th District Court in Harrison -- Bush to face a third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge and Taylor to be the main witness against him, Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said. After Taylor's father came home and discovered she was gone, and with fears Bush might try to prevent her from testifying, police issued an Amber Alert on Wednesday that ended with police discovering their bodies 200 miles south in Newport, said Michigan State Police Sgt. Joe Cairnduff.Bush's worries had worsened as his day in court neared. He had fired an urgent barrage of text messages to Taylor in recent days, though they contained "nothing threatening," Ambrozaitis said. "It was mostly 'I love you.' 'Call me.' 'Text me.'"That violated terms of his bond, which ordered Bush not to have contact with the girl. Ambrozaitis said she had planned to request higher bond for Bush and asked the Osceola County prosecutor to seek aggravated stalking charges against him.Instead, Ambrozaitis said she got a call from Taylor's father around 8 a.m. Wednesday, saying she was missing."I met with the young woman the day before she disappeared," Ambrozaitis said. "It's devastating. I was absolutely sick when I got the call."Taylor moved in with her father, Robert Manley, about two weeks ago because of the sexual-assault case. It was time for her to be a kid again, and her dad was "trying to take her away, trying to hide her, so this kind of thing wouldn't happen," he told the Free Press.Manley said he doesn't think his daughter left willingly with Bush, and didn't seem to have a problem with testifying against the man who police said had her name tattooed on the back of his neck.Ambrozaitis said Bush was a family friend of the girl and her mother when they lived in the Monroe area."At some point after they moved up here, the relationship turned sexual and the mom reported it to police" when she learned about it, Ambrozaitis said.Michigan's age of consent for sexual relations is 16."There is no consent in this," Ambrozaitis said. "She's not of an age where she can give consent."Maryann Bush said her stepson was an unemployed laborer. She said bills and debt were piling up, he couldn't afford rent for his apartment and he was about to move out. The father of two -- a boy and a girl in their teens -- was giving his belongings to friends and relatives for safekeeping. The third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge filed against him Aug. 22 could have led to 15 years in prison."When we found out about it, we asked him, 'Ray, what were you thinking?'" Maryann Bush said. "And all he would say is, 'You just don't understand.' I think he was a lost soul looking for someone to love him."Although Robert Manley said his daughter was scared of Bush, Ambrozaitis said Taylor never told her as much."She just reiterated she didn't want to have anything to do with him -- she didn't want to see him," Ambrozaitis said. "But I do understand she told family she was afraid of him."Ambrozaitis said Bush's record appeared clean enough for bond as low as $50,000, cash or surety, and authorities didn't believe he posed a threat to Taylor.

Re: TAYLOR EILEEN MANLEY - 15 yo - Harrison/Evart (NW of Saginaw) MI
Neighbors who were home when 15-year-old Taylor Manley was kidnapped say they still have questions.
Among them: How 38-year-old Raymond Bush broke into the secluded trailer where Taylor was staying sometime before sunrise on Wednesday and took her without the family's dogs barking. Police said they found the door pried open.
