Re: BENJAMIN VALLEJO - 2 yo - Bellingham WA
An Amber Alert was issued briefly Thursday evening, Nov. 4, after a father forcefully took his two-year-old son from a residence on Yew Street Road.Within minutes of the alert’s issue at about 7:30 p.m., however, a Bellingham police officer spotted the father driving on Allen Street at 34th Street, stopped the vehicle and apprehended him and an accomplice. The child, Benjamin Vallejo Jr., was retrieved unharmed and placed into the custody of Child Protective Services, Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo said. The father, Benjamin Vallejo Sr., 33, and Jennifer L. Sobjack, 23, were booked into the Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of burglary, assault, violating no-contact orders and possibly kidnapping, Elfo said. The incident began between 5 and 5:30 p.m. at a trailer park in the 2200 block of Yew Street Road, where the child’s baby sitter was residing, Elfo said.Vallejo and Sobjack allegedly forced their way into the residence, assaulted the baby sitter and fled with the child. The baby sitter was taken to St. Joseph hospital for treatment of an arm injury, Elfo said.Vallejo and Sobjack took the baby sitter’s cell phone, but she called 911 from a neighbor’s residence. Deputies arrived soon after and were able to obtain the full license plate for the van they were driving, Elfo said.A helicopter from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine division performed aerial searches of possible locations for Vallejo and Sob-jack, including Interstate 5.The van was spotted in the parking lot of the Travelodge on Samish Way at about 6:10 p.m., but was gone by the time law enforcement arrived.Elfo said deputies, FBI agents, and Bellingham officers set up a command post at a dispatch center and decided to broadcast the Amber Alert.Elfo said they also were performing address checks of known locations for Vallejo and Sobjack, which is what led the officer to 34th and Allen Street. Vallejo was known to stay at a house on Allen Street, Elfo said.At about 7:40 p.m., both Sobjack and Vallejo were being questioned by deputies. The child was laughing as another deputy played with him outside the van.Sobjack and Vallejo were placed under arrest a little after 8 p.m.The two were arrested on Monday after a drug deal they were allegedly involved turned sour.Sobjack allegedly went into an apartment in the 2700 block of West Maplewood Avenue to buy drugs, but a resident there pulled a gun on her and stole cash, according to Bellingham Police. In retaliation, Sobjack and Vallejo returned to the apartment later and allegedly stole a TV, a DVD player and a Chihuahua. They were stopped shortly afterward by deputies and arrested. Vallejo’s child was inside the vehicle and is believed to have been with them throughout the day, according to poice.Sobjack was booked into jail but was released per a court order, according to jail records. Vallejo was also booked on Monday but posted bail.
