Police find missing child at home

Today's News-Herald
Published Monday, November 15, 2010 7:05 AM MST Lake Havasu City police put everything on hold Sunday afternoon for about two hours in order to locate a missing 11-year-old boy. Morgan Mavis, of Havasu, went missing from Lake Havasu Baptist Church about noon on Sunday.
“It does take priority over anything else,” said Lake Havasu City Police Sgt. Jerry Burns. “When you are a parent yourself, you just go, ‘OK, let’s find this kid’ and do what you can … it does make you worry.”
The police department issued a missing child alert via their Nixle.com alert system at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Shortly thereafter, the department issued A Child Is Missing alert, which triggers an automatic telephone calling system to area residences, according to police.
The alert told of Mavis’ age, height, weight and clothing description. A neighbor had reportedly dropped Mavis off at the church for the 11 a.m. service. His grandmother was to pick him up at noon, but he wasn’t there.
Burns set up his command post in the parking lot of the church and assigned five officers to search for the boy. The officers searched on foot, on an all-terrain vehicle in the nearby washes and in saturated searches of the area with patrol units, Burns said.
The Sunday incident was Burns’ third in a year-and-a-half.
Police located Mavis, who was safe, about 3:45 p.m. Sunday after investigations determined he walked home to Crystal Beach from the church, which is located at 2101 North Palo Verde Blvd.
“(Mavis) had stopped at a friend’s house along the way … now I can breathe a sigh of relief,” Burns said.
