Family Fears Missing Teen Is In Danger

Mother Hasn't Seen Daughter In Weeks

WARREN, Mich. -- Police and the family of a Warren teenager who has been missing for three weeks said they have reason to believe she could be in danger.Destiney Jackson was last seen at East Detroit High School, police said.

"She's definitely in danger," said Destiney’s mother, Jacklyn Smithson.She has not had any contact with her daughter in 21 days, Smithson said."Destiney, if you see this, just come. I love you," said Smithson during an on-camera interview with Local 4’s Bora Kim.Jackson’s picture was posted on the website for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.Her family is conducting its own search efforts, including putting out 1,500 fliers.“There have been friends at her school that actually called Sunday and said that they had talked to her a week ago prior through Facebook and that she's in trouble, that she is with a 22-year-old male who will not let her go because he doesn't want to get in trouble. So obviously whoever she is with knows she is missing, knows we are looking for her. Just let her walk out the door and come home. That's all we ask, just let her come home,” said Smithson.Smithson said Destiney’s baby brother knows she is missing and calls out her name regularly. Her other brother Chance, 10, is also upset but hopeful."We all get sad and emotional," said Destiney’s brother Chance Bender.“How do you put up your tree and be happy? There's nothing to be, there's no happiness right now, until my daughter is home and safe were she belongs,” said Smithson.Warren police said there is a chance Jackson may be somewhere in the Detroit area, possibly the west side.

A 15-year-old Warren girl who left home three weeks ago to visit a friend has made contact with her family, her mother said, but has not returned home. Destiney Jackson called her mother Thanksgiving night, but offered only monosyllabic responses to 42-year-old Jacklyn Smithson's questions."I'm thinking someone was sitting there, so she could only respond 'yes' or 'no,'" Smithson said. Though the mother of four believes her daughter has run away, she has "no idea why." Smithson and Destiney's father, David Jackson, followed a tip Wednesday with help from Detroit Police and ended up at the downtown home of an 18-year-old man, identified as the boyfriend of one of Destiney's friends, who had given the teen a ride to school on Nov. 8. "He didn't do anything wrong," Smithson said. "Nobody knew she had run away." Destiney told her mother on Nov. 6 that she was going to a female friend's house, across the street from the family's home on Pingree Avenue near Stephens Road and Hayes Avenue, but when she discovered her friend wasn't home, she went elsewhere. "She's not safe," Smithson said. "She doesn't have a clue about the streets." Smithson has not seen her daughter since, but knows the teen showed up at East Detroit High School on Nov. 8, based on surveillance video. Destiney called Smithson at about 11 a.m., but gave her mother no explanation. "We're getting rumors now," Smithson said. "Some girls called last Sunday and said that she's on Facebook and that she's OK and she's with a 22-year-old guy." Warren Police said Destiney's Facebook activity leads them to believe she may be headed to Florida. She also told friends, who urged her to go home, that she's with a man who is afraid to release her for fear he'll be sent to jail, said Lt. Dan Beck. Police have no knowledge of her whereabouts, Beck said. "We're kind of at a loss," he said. Facebook has yet to respond to a request by authorities for the IP address of the computer used by Destiney who apparently accessed her account on Nov. 18, Smithson said. Destiney is described as 5 feet, 7 or 8 inches tall, 175 pounds, and has short brown curly hair, brown eyes, and a light complexion.
