An an infant only a few hours old was in critical condition Tuesday at Clear Lake Hospital in Webster after being discovered in a tool bag on a Dickinson porch, a Galveston County sheriff's spokesman said.
The baby boy was wrapped in a blanket when Juan Renovato, 48, discovered the tool bag about 9:11 a.m. on his front porch, said Renovato's son, Juan Renovato Jr.
Doctors believe the infant will survive, sheriff's spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.
The elder Renovato had just finished breakfast and was about to step onto the front porch for a smoke when he discovered the bag, his son said.
Renovato rushed back to the bedroom where his son was sleeping. "He woke me up and said, 'Somebody left a baby on the doorstep,' " Renovato Jr. recalled.
Renovato took the bag inside and asked his son to dial 911. "The baby looked like it was shivering," Renovato Jr. Said.
Paramedics arrived within minutes, checked the child's pulse and rushed it to the hospital, Renovato Jr. said.
No one knows how long the child lay on the porch with the temperature in the 30s. Renovato's wife, Juana Renovato, 47, said there was nothing on the porch when she left for work at 5:10 a.m.
"When he went to work at 2 (p.m.) he still had the baby on his mind, thinking, "Who could do that to a baby?' " Renovato Jr. said about his father. "He was in shock because he didn't know what to do."
Detectives believe the infant was born only a few hours before it was discovered, Tuttoilmondo said. Doctors believe that the child's birth was difficult and would like to find the mother in case she needs medical attention, he said.
Investigators are seeking information that may help them identify the child, its mother or whoever may have abandoned him, he said. Anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at 409-766-2322.

Police are asking for help in identifying a baby boy who was abandoned on a Dickinson doorstep in November.
The 10-day-old baby weighs about 7 pounds and is expected to be released from the hospital and placed in a foster home in Harris County early next week.
Official said the baby, who authorities are calling Nicholas, is in very good condition and expected to make a complete recovery.
“He’s a pretty important little person to us,” Galveston County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said. “We need to find out who he is. He’s going to make someone a great little Christmas present.”
Nicholas was abandoned Nov. 30 in the 2900 block of Ohio Avenue in Dickinson. Wrapped in two blankets and placed in a soft-sided tackle box, the baby spent about four hours in the bag before being found by homeowners.
The low temperature that morning was about 50 degrees.
The baby was severely cold and had a hole in his left lung when he was rushed to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, said Dr. Harvinder Bedi, neonatologist at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center.
Authorities also are worried about the mother, who could be suffering from postpartum depression or Rh immunization, a disease that could lead to problems with future pregnancies, including death of the infant.
“There’s a lot at risk for this mom,” said Dr. Gary Hankins, obstetrician at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
Tuttoilmondo said whoever abandoned the child could face a child abandonment charge but added pressing charges was “secondary to finding out who Nicholas is.”
Nicholas is white with blond hair and blue eyes. He was wrapped in an unusual blanket that resembles a gray television remote control, Tuttoilmondo said.
Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s office at 866-248-8477.
