"Toddler John Doe" - 3 yo - Warren (N of Detroit) MI
A Warren man is facing attempted murder and child abuse charges for
choking his 3-year-old stepson, telling police that the devil told him to do it.
Randall J. Caballero was arraigned Monday in 37th District Court in Warren and
faces life in prison if convicted. He is in Macomb County Jail with a
$1-million bond. His hearing is Tuesday.Caballero,
35, was arrested about 11 p.m. Friday on Crestwell Street in Sterling
Heights, threatening suicide, after apparently walking from his home on
Arden Street in Warren, knocking on a door and telling the strangers
that he had killed the child, Warren police Sgt. Heidi Metz said.Meanwhile,
the child's mother returned from work to find her other children and
family members asleep but her husband and son missing. She called Warren police.
"Everyone was asleep," Metz said of the conversation between the child's mother
and police. "He had no car, no job, where could he have gone?"Police
from both cities scoured the neighborhood bordering Sterling Heights
and Warren and found the child in the snow alive, but wearing only pajama bottoms.
Metz said Caballero's wife told police that the behavior was out of
character and that her husband was not suffering from mental illness.
Caballero is on disability and is unemployed.

A 35-year-old suburban Detroit man who told police that the devil
told him to choke his 3-year-old stepson has been ordered to undergo a
mental evaluation. The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens says Randall
Caballero of Warren was referred Tuesday to the Center for Forensic
Psychiatry in Ypsilanti. Authorities say Caballero attempted to choke the boy on Dec. 17, then told neighbors he'd killed his son. Police found the boy crying along the street. He was treated at a hospital for hypothermia. Caballero faces attempted murder and first-degree child abuse charges. Defense
lawyer Daniel Waszak, who filled in for Caballero's court-appointed
attorney, told the court "there's a psychiatric history that needs to be
examined." Caballero remains held at the Macomb County Jail on a $1 million bond.
