Caylee Anthony case: Trial day 5 – 05/28/11

The most compelling evidence heard yesterday was that of Simon Birch who was acting manager of the impound lot Casey Anthony’s Pontiac Sunfire was taken to when it was towed from the Amscot parking lot on June 30th, 2008. Mr. Birch worked for 3 years for Waste Management which is one of the largest, if not the largest, waste management companies in the United States. He also has had the unpleasant misfortune of smelling human decomposition.
Simon explained how strong the odor of decomposition was in Casey’s car when George Anthony opened the door for the first time. Similar to how Dr. Vass had explained how strong the smell was when he opened the Tedlar bag containing a sample of Casey’s stained trunk liner, Simon Birch stated that the smell made him “step back”. When Baez got up to cross examine Mr. Birch he repeatedly asked Simon why he didn’t call 911 after smelling the concerning odor in Casey’s car. Baez went so far as to imply Mr. Birch may have tried to obstruct justice by not contacting the police about a possible death. Apparently Baez doesn’t consider the fact his client never called law enforcement about her dead daughter in the same light.
