WALKER ALLEN LUMPKIN - 4 yo - Odessa TX
The death of 4-year-old Walker Allen Lumpkin is being investigated as a
homicide, a news release from the Ector County Sheriff’s Office stated.
Preliminary autopsy results showed Walker died from “blunt force trauma” to the head, the release stated.
The final autopsy results will not be known for several weeks, the release stated.
Walker
was admitted to Medical Center Hospital on July 20 and the sheriff’s
office was noticed at 9:35 p.m. of possible child abuse, the front page
of a sheriff’s incident report stated.
While at MCH, Walker
underwent surgery and had two pieces of his brain removed and a portion
of his left skull to let the brain swell, family friend Crystal Biles
said.
Walker was than transported to Covenant Children’s Hospital
in Lubbock where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 p.m. Sunday, Stephanie
Swindell, Walker’s mother said.
Swindell said she and all of
Walker’s family were looking for justice for the boy, and the fact that
there was now a homicide investigation provided some comfort.
“They’re
putting forth an effort to find out who did it,” Swindell said,
although ultimately what she wanted to know was how and why it had
happened so that it might be prevented for someone else.
“I will never be able to see his smile,” Swindell said. “I’ll never be able to hear his laugh.”
Swindell
said the incident happened while her son was staying with his father,
David Lumpkin, in Odessa. Swindell lives in Nashville, Tenn., with her
husband. She said she’d asked David Lumpkin to temporarily take care of
Walker due to her financial situation, and Walker had been with his
father about three and a half months.
When contacted Tuesday, David Lumpkin referred all questions to his lawyer, although he did not specify who his lawyer was.

Re: WALKER ALLEN LUMPKIN - 4 yo - Odessa TX
The Odessa teen accused of a horrific murder
was scheduled to be in court next week but the trial has been
rescheduled to June 5th.
Ector County Judge Jim Bobo tells NewsWest 9,
the delay is due to evidence making its way to the prosecuting
attorney's office late, as well as other scheduling issues.
You'll remember the 14-year-old boy is accused of killing four-year-old Walker Lumpkin.
Last June, Ector County investigators said the teen intentionally ran over Lumpkin with a four wheeler.
But that wasn't what killed him.
A week later, Lumpkin was taken to the hospital with head injuries and later died from a blow to the head.

Another delay has caused the trial of a 14-year-old accused in the death of 4-year-old Walker Lumpkin to be moved to June 19.
The teenager is charged with murder in connection with Lumpkin’s July 24 death.
Judge Jim Bobo said scheduling conflicts and health issues of an attorney’s family member delayed the June 6 trial setting.
“It’s tough when you get into the summer months and when you have
expert witnesses you have to get in here,” Bobo said. “We are hoping
that the 19th works because I want to get this case disposed. We’re not
trying to prolong this any more than it has to be.”
If the case is delayed again for whatever, reason, Bobo said the next
possible trial date would be in August because no juries are scheduled
in July.
Bobo said the trial will be closed to the public because in juvenile
cases, it is up to the defense to file a motion to close the trial
proceedings, something done early in the process.
Walker’s final autopsy report cites “blunt force trauma to the head” as the cause of death.
The 14-year-old is also charged with injury to a child in connection
with a July 13 incident with a four-wheeler which is not connected to
Walker’s death.
