Ryan Cyr and Nathan Gordey: LOCATED
Days after going public with the names and descriptions of two missing youths, RCMP have reported them found, "safe and sound" in the Fort McMurray area.
According to the initial RCMP release, Ryan Cyr, 16, and Nathan Gordey, 13, had not been seen in "several weeks" and were believed to be together as they travel in similar circles.
While it may seem odd that two children could be missing for weeks without the public being alerted, Const. Christina Wilkins with the Wood Buffalo RCMP said this case was handled like any other.
"The police were looking into it quite actively, exhausting all the resources we had. Just because they were considered missing youth doesn't necessarily mean we will be putting out a bulletin that they're missing," explained Wilkins. "Don't take this by any stretch that we were negligent, because we weren't. We aren't always going to put out a bulletin for missing persons, adult or youth."
Wilkins explained the boys were known to socialize with similar people, so their names were released together and similar missing persons files were opened. She said turning to the public for assistance was the next step in a system that was working like "clockwork, just as it was supposed to."
"In this particular case, because we have been looking for them for a while and they've been missing for several weeks, a concern for their safety was quite prominent. We put out this release, asking for public assistance, and it paid off," said Wilkins. "We got a number of phone calls and tips and we eventually tracked them down here over the weekend."
Stressing the happy ending, Wilkins said the police are relieved the boys were found unharmed and are appreciative of those member of Wood Buffalo that called in with information on their whereabouts.
"The unfortunate thing is that we had missing youth to begin with," said Wilkins.
"That's never ideal, however, it was handled in the way that any similar file would be handled."
