"Newborn John" SHAW - 3 Months/ Accused: Benjamin Shaw - Phoenix AZ

A 25-year-old north Phoenix man was arrested
early Friday and accused of causing his 3-month-old baby severe head
injuries by violently shaking him.

Police said Phoenix Fire responded to a call shortly before 11 p.m.
Thursday about a child suffering a seizure at a home in the 16600 block
of North Seventh Street, south of Greenway Parkway. There, paramedics
found the infant boy in medical distress.

The baby was taken to a hospital, where officials contacted police
about 2 a.m. to alert them that there appeared to be signs of abuse. The
child remained in critical condition Friday afternoon, authorities
said.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman, said Benjamin Shaw
admitted under questioning to getting angry and shaking the baby while
the child's mother and grandmother were away at a store.

Shaw was arrested and booked into a Maricopa County jail on a count of child abuse.
