Family of missing teen wants Amber Alert reform

WICHITA, Kansas --
Dozens of e-mails flooded the KSN mail account Friday from viewers and
concerned citizens wanting to help find 14 year old Dana Phiri who
hasn't been seen by family since last Saturday.
Family members started an e-mail blast after they said they aren't getting the help they need to find her.
“She
is a 14-year-old girl who has been missing for four days with no extra
clothes, food, or money in a large city with a known sex trafficking
ring,” the email reads.
“She
is still voluntarily missing in a runaway status and she is not being
held anywhere against her will,” said Sgt. Kevin Bradford, with the
Explointed and Missing Child Unit.
Investigators say they are following up on leads, but say there is nothing right now that shows that she's in great danger.
“We haven't got any strong credible information as to where her location is right now,” said Bradford. “We have got information to make us believe that she is still is voluntarily gone."
The
family is frustrated with the search to find her and say the efforts
have been hindered simply because there was no Amber Alert issued.
Cases like Dana's are all too common.
“They
could have conflict with family, they could be going through normal
teenage emotions, they could feel like they need to get some place
safe,” said Melanie Miller Garrett, Program Director at the Wichita
Children’s Home.
Regardless of the situation, families of runaway children say they still feel helpless, even if it was at the child’s will.
Police say there are between 140-170 runaway cases every month.
They are limited on what they can do because the child leaves on their own.
When authorities put out an amber alert, the missing person is usually abducted and is in danger.
“Any
reasons where they are about to be seriously harmed or killed, then it
escalates a priority for us to locate this child even more,” said Bradford.
Police told us they believe that Dana is still in the Wichita area. The family says their main goal is to bring her home, but they say the Amber Alert process needs to be reformed.
