El Paso police detectives on Tuesday night arrested a man on investigation of capital murder in the death of a 2-year-old boy who died Friday.
Ever
Mendez, 29, was jailed with no bond on a warrant charging capital
murder after an autopsy found that Isaiah Villanueva died of blunt force
trauma, police spokesman Officer Javier Sambrano said.
Sambrano declined to reveal the specific injuries the boy had because an investigation continues.
Isaiah
died at a hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home Friday
afternoon in the 600 block of Lafayette Drive in the Lower Valley.
Police said Mendez lived with the boy's mother and her children.
The boy's injuries "did take place during the time that he (Mendez) was alone with the child," Sambrano said.
After
an investigation began into the boy's death, Mendez was arrested and
jailed on a warrant for injury to a child for allegedly hurting Isaiah's
brother in a previous incident, police said.
Mendez also had warrants for allegedly not making support payments and for traffic tickets.

The family of a two-year-old beaten to death by his mother's boyfriend in The Lower Valley say their last goodbyes.
Two-year-old Isaiah Villanueva's funeral was held at The Hillcrest
Funeral Home. The family says it's hard to believe someone would want to
hurt the innocent child.

Fernandez Escarsega is the uncle of the toddler police say was
beaten to death by Ever Mendez. He says there is no excuse to harm a
child.
"Especially to little kids. If it was somebody bigger that could defend
themselves. You know, I could see that, but if somebody can't defend
himself, that's what I can't stand," said Escarsega.
Mendez was the boyfriend of Isaiah's mother Dora.
Police found the boy unresponsive in the home. They say the cause of death is blunt force trauma.
Mendez has been charged with capital murder. Escarsega says that the
family has no mercy for the man who killed his two-year-old nephew.

"I don't feel sorry for him. Whatever he gets he deserves. You know for a little boy. You can't do that," said Escarsega.
Family friend Jazmin Jimenez says that they brought balloons for Isaiah because it always cheered him up.
"When he cries, he wants to see balloons. When my mom had balloons, she
would give him balloons and he stopped crying. He was a little kid who
always smiled," said Jimenez.

Veronica Quintanilla says that although Isaiah was a distant relative, the tragedy is hard to comprehend.
"You never think it is going to happen to you or someone in your
family. It's hard. Even though we weren't that close, it's sad. It
breaks my heart," said Quintanilla.

Family members also say that you can never be too safe to make sure
you know the criminal background of the people who you trust alone with
your children.

Mendez was charged with a felony last year for attempting to strangle a family member.
