A Northland woman was convicted Tuesday of trying to poison her twin infant daughters by putting rubbing alcohol into their sippy cups of milk.
After her 1-year-old daughters were hospitalized for poisoning, Gloria S. Jones, 23, of Kansas City, North was charged with two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child for the incident on Oct. 29, 2012.
According to authorities, police were called to Children’s Mercy Hospital to investigate allegations that the twins had ingested rubbing alcohol, which nearly killed one of them, Clay County Prosecutor Daniel L. White said.

Investigators interviewed several relatives, but their probe eventually led to Jones, who later admitted to pouring rubbing alcohol into their sippy cups of milk. Jones said she was feeling overwhelmed with caring for the twins and thought the rubbing alcohol would calm them down because they were “whiny.” She told police that was the only time she gave the infants any kind of alcohol.
“Rubbing alcohol can be lethal in doses as low as 8 ounces in adults,” White said in a prepared statement. “It doesn’t take much to put a child at risk.”
White said one of the twins had be to placed on a ventilator. The girls are nearly 3 years old now and appear to have no lasting effects from consuming the rubbing alcohol, he said.
Prosecutors said relatives are caring for the girls.
Jones represented herself during the two-day jury trial in Clay County Circuit Court. She presented no evidence and declined to testify in front of the jury, according to court records. Prosecutors said she presented her case in oral arguments.
The jury recommended that Jones be sentenced to a total of five years on both criminal charges. She is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 7.
