Five years later, the brutal slayings of Tammy Cooper and her three children remain unsolved.

Five years later, the brutal slayings of Tammy Cooper and her three children remain unsolved.  Tammy Cooper, 45, was looking for a better life when she moved herself and her three children from Dallas to Lubbock, Texas. However, instead of a better life, the family of four was found brutally slain in their East Lubbock apartment at 7:42 a.m. on October 25, 2004 by a man who stopped by the unit to take the children to school. When the police arrived, the victims were identified as Cooper, her twin sons, Kadiele and Kasheim Allen, 9, and her daughter, Mahogany Jasmine Allen, 11.

The bodies were found in the kitchen, living room and bedroom.  Lt. Victor Quintano described their injuries as "violent in nature," and aside from saying that the crime scene was bloody he said that he could not comment. Lubbock Police Chief Claude Jones, however, said that the victims' injuries appeared to be a result of blunt force trauma....

Neighbors said that Cooper and her kids had moved into the apartment complex about six months before their deaths.  The people next door told police that they "didn't hear nothing."

Jones said that his investigators had centered their probe on the family and had worked outward to friends and acquaintances who may have had contact with the victims in the hours before their deaths. "We think the perpetrator or perpetrators are known to the family," Jones said.  "We don't believe a stranger is involved."

Jones said at the time that he believes the murders occurred within the 24 hours preceding the gruesome discovery.

Now, five years later, the police have said that they have a name and a voice of a possible suspect, but little else as they attempt to keep the case alive.  Although there have been a number of tips called in over the past few years, they haven't produced any new leads and there is not enough evidence to enable them to focus on a suspect.

The passage of time since the slayings has brought more of the details to the forefront. For example, the public now knows that the method of death involved cutting, stabbing and beating.

Investigators have said that they do not believe anything was taken from the apartment.

"There's a ton of evidence, but there's nothing that links that evidence to a suspect yet," said Sgt. Jim Pachall.  "It's frustrating to all of us."

Over the course of the investigation detectives learned that a man came to the family's apartment door at about 11:15 p.m. the night before their bodies were found, but know little else about him.

"We do not know who he is," Pachall said.  "We'd still like to identify him."

Cooper had been talking to a friend on the phone when her friend heard someone pounding on the door the night before. The friend reportedly asked Cooper if she knew who was at the door, and she replied, "Butch." The friend could hear a man's deep voice as one of Cooper's children let him in. Hence, the name and the voice police say they have to go on.

Investigators are still hopeful that improved technology being used today might help produce some DNA evidence that will tie the killer or killers to the case.  In the meantime, police are urging anyone with any information aut the case to please call the Crime Line at (806) 741-1000.
