CITRUS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Additional charges have been filed against a Citrus man accusing of killing his 1-year-old son last week so he could play video games, the Sheriff's Office says. Two others have also been arrested in connection to the case.
Cody Wygant, 24, was charged with murder last Thursday in connection to the death of his son Daymeon. Now, Wygant is additionally facing charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm to a 3-month-old female also living in the home.
When detectives responded to the residence, they say the conditions of the home were "absolutely deplorable." One sergeant on scene commented that "this is the worst roach infestation I have ever seen."
According to the arrest affidavit, investigators noticed the residence was "heavily infested with bugs, insects and contained a very foul odor which could be smelled from the street."
The Sheriff's Office says the 3-month-old baby girl was in need of immediate medical treatment. Medical staff discovered she had "flat head syndrome," caused from leaving a baby in a playpen or crib for extended periods of time.
The baby also had a severe yeast infection that covered her body and actually caused tissue damage, as well as other medical issues.
Also arrested were Geneva DuFour, 55, and Jessika DuFour, 22, both of Homosassa. Both are facing felony charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm.
The infant was removed from the home and transported to Citrus Memorial Hospital and then to Shand's Hospital in Gainesville where she was put into ICU. After being released, she was placed in foster care.
"The death of Daymeon was a horrible tragedy, but it led to the discovery of extreme abuse to the baby girl in the house," said Undersheriff Buddy Grant. "Thankfully, we got to this child when we did. I don't want to think about what would have happened to her without this type of intervention."
