A 21-year-old Hesperia mother and her live-in boyfriend were in jail Thursday after the woman’s 6-month-old baby boy was found to have multiple broken bones that indicated ongoing abuse, authorities said.
Maria Estrada and her 23-year-old boyfriend Christain Lopez attempted to obtain medical treatment for the boy, prompting a doctor to call a child abuse hotline, as required by state law.
A responding deputy went to a home in the 14000 block of Sequoia Street (map) in Hesperia to do a welfare check on the infant, and found “deformities in the infant’s arms and legs indicating bone fractures,” a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated.
Hesperia Fire Department personnel took the boy to a local hospital, where X-rays confirmed multiple fractures and other injuries that indicated long-term physical abuse, according to the release.
“Without intervention, this tiny victim likely faced a future of continued abuse with potentially devastating results,” the release stated.
After interviewing Estrada and Lopez, detectives concluded Estrada knew about the abuse but did nothing to stop it.
The baby was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center and was being treated. He was expected to survive.
The pair were arrested at 4 a.m. Wednesday at the Hesperia Police Department, online county inmate records show.
Lopez was booked on suspicion of torture, willful inhuman injury to a child resulting in traumatic condition, and aggravated mayhem. He was being held at Adelanto Detention Center on $1 million bail, inmate records showed. (He goes by both Christain and Christian, according to county records.)
Estrada was being held on suspicion of willful injury to child likely to produce great bodily injury or death. She was at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on $100,000 bail, according to inmate records.
The couple were due to appear in Victorville Superior Court Friday, the records showed.
The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office expected to receive the case on Thursday, and arraignment was likely to happen Friday afternoon, spokesman Chris Lee said.
No booking photos of the pair were released.
