SANIIYAH KUYKENDALL - 2 yo (2010)/ Convicted: Mother's BF; Calvin Jones - Memphis TN
A Memphis mother and her boyfriend are charged in the
death of the woman's 2-year-old daughter.
Anisha Alford is charged with child abuse. Her live-in boyfriend Calvin Jones is charged with murder,
child abuse, and child neglect.
It happened Friday, in Fox Meadows. Police say Jones beat two-year-old Saniiyah Kuykendall
with a shoe and his hand after the little girl used the bathroom on the
floor of their apartment. Reportedly the shoe used was one of Jones basketball sneakers.
Alford told police that the girl
complained of being sick, was cold to the touch, and was spitting up for
much of that night. Police say a friend visited the couple, and noticed
the toddler's eyes were rolling back in her head.
The friend
told the couple she would take care of their other children if they took
the little girl to the emergency room. But police say the couple
refused and went to sleep.
The morning of Saturday, May 16,
police say Alford awoke and found the little girl dead. That's when she
called police. The Medical Examiner says the girl died from blunt force
trauma.

A Memphis man is charged
with beating a 2-year-old to death with a basketball sneaker, after the
toddler accidentally defecated on herself.
According to an
affidavit, Calvin Jones told police he
was babysitting the 2-year-old girl Friday May 14, when she had an
accident.
Jones told police he used "a basketball shoe" and the
back of his hand to hit the child several times.
Jones is charged
with first degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse.
The
child's mother, Anisha Alford, is charged with one count of aggravated
child abuse.
Police say Alford admitted her daughter had spit up,
and complained of being cold and feeling sick, but she took no action.
Police records do not indicate whether Alford was aware of the beating.
Authorities
say Alford and Jones decided not to seek medical treatment, and then
found the child dead Saturday morning.

The friend should not get away with not calling 911 either IMO. I'm sure the friend told others about what she saw too. Shame on the lot of them.

A rally cry from child advocates after a 2-year-old was beaten to death
in Hickory Hill. Her mother's boyfriend is charged with murder and child
abuse after he admitted to beating the toddler with his shoe. A flag is
flying at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center in Midtown to honor
Saniiyah Kuykendall. It's also there to alert the community.
Saniiyah
was the first child abuse death in Shelby County in nearly six months.
During a moment of silence, the CAC’s flag was raised Thursday morning.
People gather to pay tribute to a life cut short.
“That she died
in such a cruel and lingering way,” said Virginia Stallworth, with the
CAC. “The result of a harsh beating, is outrageous and unacceptable.”
Police
say Calvin Jones was watching his girlfriend Anisha Alford's daughter
Saniiyah Kuykendall when he beat her with a shoe. They went to bed. When
they woke up Saturday morning, she was dead. He's charged with murder,
and they're both charged with child abuse.
“We're here to tell
everyone, that which we already know, that which we take for granted,
how wrong it is to mistreat, to beat, to shake, to injure a child,” said
Shelby County Prosecutor Bobby Carter. “We have to be spokesmen. We
have to be messengers.”
Relatives of Saniiyah's father were at
the center Thursday meeting with prosecutors and counselors. They're
preparing to bury their baby.
“When something like this happens,
we have to take pause and realize that we still have a lot of work to
do,” said Nancy Williams, Director of the Memphis Child Advocacy Center.
The
flag will stay raised for one week at the center. Advocates hope it's a
long time before they ever have to raise this flag again.
Anisha
Alford is out of jail tonight after posting a $7,500 bond. Calvin Jones
is being held without bond. He's due back in court Tuesday. A
4-year-old and one-year-old were also living in the apartment where
Saniiyah was killed. They are now staying with grandparents.

Toddler Beaten to Death With a Basketball Shoe After Using Bathroom On the Floor
Thursday, May 27, 2010
A Memphis, Tenn., child was beaten to death with a tennis shoe by the man who was babysitting her after she defecated on the floor.
Calvin Jones, 23, is in the custody of local authorities, after he admitted he administered punishment to the girl, Saniiyah Kuykendall, whom he was babysitting. He said he reacted instinctively when the 2-year-old girl used the bathroom on the floor. His form of punishment included smacking the toddler around with the back of his hand and then resorting to beating her with a basketball shoe.
According to reports, the toddler’s 21-year-old mother, Anisha Ashford, returned home to find the little girl not feeling well and complaining. Also, when Ashford touched the baby, she felt cold. A neighbor told authorities that about 11:15 on the night of the incident, the child was seen spitting up and gagging and that her eyes were rolling toward the back of her head. The neighbor implored the couple to take the little girl to the hospital, but they refused.
Instead, the couple went to bed. They found the child dead the next morning.
Jones is being charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse. For her refusal to take the child the hospital and no reporting the incident to the police, the mother is being charged with one count of aggravated child abuse.
The other children in the home, ages 1 and 4, were placed with grandparents. Police have not indicated whether the mother, Alford, was aware of the beating. — terry shropshire.
