Galveston police investigate 1-year-old child's death

Galveston, Texas - Police are investigating after a 1-year-old child died in a Galveston apartment Monday night.

Galveston police said they got a call at around midnight about an infant that was unresponsive in an apartment in the Antigua Apartment Complex at 8008 Seawall Blvd.

"EMS arrives first and finds the neighbor actually performing CPR on the child, takes over CPR and continues it until they didn't find any kind of signs of resuscitation. At that time they ceased CPR," said Sgt. Joshua Schirad, with the Galveston Police Department.

"It's just terrible. It's terrible to hear that in our community today. Right up here on the beach, you hear about it all the time but you never think it would happen here. It's sad," said neighbor Wanda Burkett.

The Galveston Police Department criminal investigation division and crime scene investigators responded to process any forensic evidence. Police said detectives interviewed several parties, including the baby's parents and neighbors.

"At this point we are really waiting on a couple of things, including the medical examiner's autopsy report to kind of give us clues as to the indication to the reason of death," said Schirad.

There were three other children -- ages 2, 4, and 6 -- in the home, according to Children's Protective Services. They are staying with family.

Galveston officers say they are working closely with the District Attorney's Office and CPS.

They have not released the name of the people involved and no arrests have been made at this time.
