MEGHAN LANDOWSKI - 16 yo (2008) - Portsmouth VA
Portsmouth — A Portsmouth teen was sentenced to 42 years in prison
Thursday in the death of a former classmate in a 2008 homicide that
drew enormous media attention.
Robert Lee Barnes, 17, did not
face the death penalty because he is a juvenile who was tried as an
adult. He had pleaded guilty in the death of 16-year-old Meghan
Landowski, his friend and former classmate at Churchland High School.
Landowski was found dead in her family's home on April 10, 2008, bound,
gagged and slashed to death.
Barnes, who was arrested
after a six-month investigation into Landowski's death, had pleaded
guilty to first-degree murder, attempted rape, aggravated sexual
battery, abduction and statutory burglary.
District Court Judge
James Hawks, working in accordance with a plea arrangement set forward
by Commonwealth's Attorney Earle Mobley, sentenced Barnes to 38 years
for the murder charge and two years each on the burglary and sexual
battery charges, with all sentences to be served consecutively.
Hawks also gave Barnes more than 50 years of suspended prison time.
