In a ditch where a body was found Wednesday in southwest Greeley, the
water was just turned on Tuesday to clear the irrigation ditch. That
means the body may have been tucked into an underground portion of the
ditch for as long as two months — if the body is identified as that of a
missing Greeley girl.

Members of the Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority
and Weld County coroner's investigator George Roosevelt
remove a body behind a tarp held
up by firefighters.
The body was found Wednesday morning in a drainage
ditch along 35th Avenue and 29th Street.
The body, which has not been identified,
was found within a half-mile of the home of
Kayleah Wilson, 12, who has been missing since March.

About 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, a ditch
rider found the badly decomposed body near a water gate on the ditch.
Police and the Weld County Coroner's Office had yet to identify the body
Wednesday night.

Greeley-Loveland Ditch Co. officials said they
delayed running water to clear the ditch because of recent rainfall, but
the water was released Tuesday. Also, rainstorms in the area Tuesday
night meant the water in the ditch was running high.

The ditch goes underground for about a mile from 47th Avenue to 35th Avenue, and
there are access grates and manhole covers along the trail that follows
above the ditch. The body was found about a quarter-mile from the
underground exit of the ditch.

After the body was found, Greeley police called the FBI, which sent agents from Denver to the site just a
half-mile from the home of missing 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson.

Ron Brinkman of the ditch company said the rider had been working for 10
years on the ditch, “and never found anything like this.”

An autopsy was performed on the body Wednesday afternoon, but police still
weren't saying whether the body was that of Wilson. Because of
decomposition, police weren't immediately able to determine whether the
body was that of a male or a female.

Kayleah disappeared March 28 after she left her home in south Greeley to meet a friend for a
birthday party. It spawned the most intense investigation in Greeley
history, with more than 50 FBI agents, dozens of Greeley police and Weld
County sheriff's deputies searching for the girl and for evidence in
the case.

Greeley police spokesman Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said the
area where the body was found had been searched at least twice since
Kayleah went missing. Police have a surveillance tape from the Greeley
Mall that shows her in the parking lot on the day she disappeared. The
mall is about a mile east of the spot where the body was found.

About two weeks into the case with no sign of Kayleah, the FBI returned to
Denver and the number of detectives was cut back, although Greeley
police continued to follow leads every day, Tymkowych said.

Soon after the body was found, police sealed off the area and called on the
Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority dive team, which recovered the body
for the Weld County Coroner's Office. Dozens of detectives and officers
were at the scene, along with representatives of the Weld County
District Attorney's Office.

Wilson family friend Michelle Thompson said the family is “holding up as best they can.”

Family members declined requests for interviews Wednesday.

Numerous searches around Weld County have been conducted on weekends, but nothing
was found. Thompson has planned another search in Milliken on Saturday.

“Until the body is positively identified as Kayleah, we're
planning on having the search,” Thompson said.

Greeley police are consulting with a forensic odontologist, who will look at dental
records to see whether an identity can be confirmed. If the dental
records can be used, the body found Wednesday could be identified as
early as noon today. If not, police will use DNA tests to identify the
body, which can take several days.

The discovery of a body in Greeley has an entire
community wondering, praying and hoping for the best.Candles and
stuffed animals have been set on a bridge near the water where the body
was discovered.Even though there's been nothing official from
investigators, many Greeley residents said their gut tells them the body
is that of 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson. Wilson was first reported
missing in late March.
At a vigil near the scene of the discovery, many people held candles. Many
of those attending had never met the little girl."I just seen it
on TV. Pictures and all. I feel so sad for the family," said Felicia
Madison, a resident of Evans."I have children and grand children.
And I always fear for them," said Madison.Madison feels another
family will appreciate her good thoughts and prayers."I told
them if I could walk good. I would've been walking all over with a lot
of people, hoping to find this child," said Madison."It's sad and
it's scary," said Tanna Benavidez, a Greeley parent.Regardless
of who it may be, there's a sense of fear knowing something bad happened
at the place where they call home."I have an eleven year old
daughter. I think about it all of the time," said Benavidez.

One interesting detail - she was only
walking about 2 blocks to meet up with a friend, and they were walking
together the rest of the much longer distance. She never even made it
the two blocks.
FBI thinks she never went to meet the friend - they think she went to the mall instead. did you see the map? that mall is pretty far away.

Post by oviedo45 Thu May 20, 2010 2:00 pm

Did we fail Kayleah? If this body is hers, I am sure the local police and FBI are asking themselves this question - IMO
---------------------------------------------
March 28
» 3:40 p.m.: Kayleah Wilson says goodbye to her mother, April Wilson,
and leaves the apartment in the 2800 block of 28th Street. She's walking
to meet a friend south of the Greeley Mall, then to go to a birthday
party. It's likely she crosses U.S. 34 Bypass to get to the Greeley
Mall.

» 10 p.m.: Discovering Kayleah did not make it to the party
and did not return home, April Wilson calls Greeley police to report
her daughter is missing. As is standard with missing older children —
Kayleah is 12 — police handle it as a possible runaway and put out an
alert to watch for her.

March 29

» Morning: Greeley police officers discuss the case, canvas the area
and learn there is no indication that Kayleah is a runaway. Police spend
the day questioning the family and friends of Kayleah and contacting
possible witnesses in the neighborhood and the area south of the Greeley
Mall.

» Police request an Amber Alert through the state but are
told the case does not meet the requirements. Her name and photo are
placed on state and national missing children sites. There is no
evidence of her running away, nor is there any evidence of foul play.
March 30

» Morning: Search dogs are brought in but are unable to pick up a scent
of the girl. Detectives decide it is time to send out a press release.

»2:54 p.m.: The first press release with Kayleah's photo and description
is e-mailed from the Greeley police to media throughout the state;
police increase the number of officers and detectives working on the
case. The FBI is asked to join the investigation.

March 31

» 9 a.m.: There are now 25 officers and detectives working the case.
They search U.S. 34 Bypass near the house, looking through ditches,
culverts and bushes. No evidence of Kayleah is found. About the same
time, April Wilson passes out fliers of her daughter at Greeley West
High School.

» The FBI sends agents to meet and join the
investigation with Greeley detectives.

» April Wilson spends much of the day at the Greeley Police Department, trying to help find her
daughter.
April 1
» FBI agents collect evidence from the Wilson home in central Greeley.
Authorities say the type of evidence collected includes carpet samples,
paint samples and other specimens that could help investigators later
in the case.

» Students at Brentwood Middle School, which Kayleah
attends, make ribbons to raise awareness of her disappearance.
April 2
» The Kayleah Wilson case becomes the Denver FBI's highest priority.
“We have significant resources here assisting in this investigation,”
says FBI Special Agent In Charge James Davis.

» Police say there will be a larger number of police cars and Weld County sheriff's
vehicles on the Greeley streets in an effort to locate Kayleah.

»Police say they have looked at all the security camera video from
businesses near the Greeley Mall to look for evidence that Kayleah was
in the area.

» Police release new photos of Kayleah and a photo
of the kind of asthma inhaler that she uses and ask the public to be on
the lookout for any inhaler like this. They ask that if anyone does see a
similar inhaler discarded that they not touch it and call police.

April 3
» A dive team from Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority searches ponds in
the Gateway Lakes Nature Area in south-central Greeley. Authorities on
foot and horseback comb wooded, undeveloped areas between Greeley West
High School and the CenterPlace shopping area.

April 4
» Kayleah grandmother, Brenda Jamison, and Kayleah's mother, April
Wilson, are surrounded by family and friends as they attend Easter
services at the Northern Colorado Cowboy Church in Lucerne. A week
before she disappeared, Kayleah told her mother that she wanted to
attend the church's Easter services. “Honestly, I wanted her to walk
through the doors. It would have been lovely,” April Wilson says.

April 5
» A security camera videotape shows Kayleah walking by the mall on the
day she disappeared, according to an FBI agent.

» Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner at a press conference makes a plea to Kayleah to come
home if she can.

» The number of law enforcement agents on the
case reaches close to 100, with Greeley police, the FBI and the Weld
County Sheriff's Office involved.
April 6
» The number of tips in Kayleah's disappearance surpasses 300.
April 7
» Kayleah's father, Michael Wilson of Redwood Valley, Calif., tells The
Tribune that her disappearance has been difficult to cope with from so
far away. “All I care about is getting her home safely,” he writes in an
e-mail.

» A handful of people gather at Riverside Park in Evans
to continue the search for Kayleah. The search is led by Ken Turner,
Kayleah's cousin.

April 8

Police respond to a lead about a backpack found that bears Kayleah's
name. It turns out to be an old backpack that had been donated and later
purchased at a church sale.

April 9
» About 75 people gather at Higher Grounds, 134 11th Ave. in Greeley,
for a candlelight vigil for Kayleah. “This isn't a vigil that we have
given up — it is a vigil that we are continuing to do our quest and
bring her home,” said Michelle Thompson, who has organized a Facebook
page in support of Kayleah.
April 10
About 50 people join representatives from the Laura Recovery Center
for Missing Children of Texas on a search for Kayleah.
April 11
» More than 140 volunteers join the Laura Recover Center search.
April 13
» The FBI scales back the hunt for Kayleah after two weeks of not
finding leads or clues to her whereabouts. The number of FBI agents is
cut and the command post in the Greeley police headquarters is closed.
“We've cut back on the number of agents working the case, but they can
be back up here immediately if something breaks,” FBI spokesman Dave
Joly says.
April 16
» Authorities try to squelch rumors that Kayleah's body has been found.
“We received a lot of calls about that, be we need to assure everyone
that we're still searching,” said Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych.
April 17
» Rain hampers already-slow search efforts. A community search ends
early because of weather. More than 50 people volunteers to look for the
Greeley girl.
April 26
» Stories of Kayleah being found continue to circulate throughout
Greeley and stream into the Greeley Police Department. The stories
aren't true and they're difficult for the family. “It hurts when people
do this,” April Wilson says.
May 8
» More than a dozen volunteers join a search in Windsor that is
organized by Kayleah's mother. “There were hundreds of volunteers at
first, but every little bit counts,” April Wilson says.

» The day before Mother's Day, April Wilson says Kayleah always made the
holiday special. She says that since Kayleah's disappearance, she has
had a hard time sleeping at night. “I'm constantly wondering where is
she, where could she be? ... She didn't even take a coat. When it's
rainy outside, my first thought is, ‘I hope she's inside.' ”
May 15
» April Wilson sits at a table at the Children's Safety Fair at
CenterPlace Shopping Center in west Greeley. She has photos of her
missing daughter and silently lets people know what can happen.
May 19
About 6 a.m.: A ditch rider discovers a body in an irrigation ditch
in southwest Greeley. The body is badly decomposed when it is discovered
near a water gate. It is unknown if this is the body of the missing
Greeley girl.
(* adding that the body was naked and bloated)

Officials: Person Found
Dead In Ditch Was Killed

ReportingValerie Castro
GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4/AP) ―

Officials in Greeley now say the body found in
a ditch near the location where missing girl Kayleah Wilson lived
was that of a homicide victim.

Authorities didn't say Tuesday how the person was killed, nor did they
share any new details about the identity of the victim.

The body was found early Monday morning and there was immediate
speculation that it could be that of Wilson, who who was last seen March
28 while walking to a friend's house for a birthday party. Police said
they couldn't rule it out as a possibility.

The sixth-grader's mother didn't comment on Monday.

A candlelight vigil was held on Monday night near the
ditch. Attendees prayed for the family of Wilson and said if the
body isn't Wilson they were praying for the family of whomever that person is.

Identifying the body through dental records could take
days, but it could take weeks if investigators must use DNA, FBI
spokesman Dave Joly said.

Police work to ID body found in ditch
Discovery made near home of missing girl from Greeley

By 9News and The Associated Press
• May 20, 2010
GREELEY - Homicide detectives spent Wednesday
afternoon and evening trying to determine if the decomposed body found
on Wednesday morning is that of 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson.
The coroner has not
determined the identification of the body, and Greeley Police say the
earliest information will come is Thursday afternoon. Kayleah has been
missing for nearly two months. There was a mixture of emotions Wednesday night in
Greeley as friends and family held a tearful candlelight vigil, waiting
anxiously to learn if the body could be lead to the outcome they've
feared for months.Michelle
Thompson, a friend of the family who says April Wilson, Kayleah’s
mother, is heartbroken to learn of Wednesday’s discovery. “She’s
at a loss, along with the rest of us,” Thompson said. The
body, found about 6 a.m. in a ditch near 29th Street and 35th Avenue,
is so badly decomposed that investigators cannot tell whether it is male
or female and are unable to determine the person’s age. The
body has been underwater for a “substantial amount of time,” a source
told 9News.
Tymkowych says the coroner will perform an autopsy on
the body to try to determine its identity and cause of death. The
Weld County Coroner could use dental records to positively identify the
body. If that is not possible due to the body’s condition, DNA testing
could be used. Results of DNA tests can take several weeks. Investigators
are looking into whether the body could have been laying elsewhere and
Tuesday’s storms could have dislodged the body and carried it down a
ditch. “There was very heavy rain in Weld County for a
prolonged period of time with the storms Tuesday night,” said 9News
meteorologist Kathy Sabine. The National Weather Service
said downtown Greeley received between 1.23 and 1.43 inches of rain
Tuesday. Greeley Police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said the body
was found in about three feet of water, behind the old Kendall Printing
location in a commercial area, near a school and a church. According
to Tymkowych, an employee of a ditch company was doing a routine check
of the ditch when he spotted the body and alerted authorities. The
worker checks the ditch daily, and he told police he assumes the body
was not there on Tuesday.
Investigators are attempting to determine
how the body came to be in the ditch.
“It’s hard to say if this was
deposited here or if it was here and it was just now uncovered,”
Tymkowych said. The body was found in an area near where
12-year-old Kayleah Wilson went missing on March 28. Kayleah was last
seen leaving her home to walk to a friend’s birthday party, but never
arrived. When asked directly if the body was that of
Kayleah, Tymkowych said, “We cannot rule that possibility out.”Tymkowych
says given the size of the body, it is “a possibility.” Tymkowych
says the area has been searched at least twice since Kayleah’s
disappearance. He would not say if there were any items with the body
which could indicate its identity.

“We can’t identify the items
that we’ve found,” Tymkowych said.

Any thing odd about this comment?

http://abcnews.go.com/US/decomposed-body-found-kayleah-wilson-missing/story?id=10689749

Don't you think the mom sounds just a little odd? She was talking about her 12 year old daughter going missing with no emotion, not a tear in her eye, nothing. And then her friends all happy and jolly and joking around with smiles on their faces "Oh well she's in a better place now." There is definitely something missing from this story and I'm positive that her mother has something to do with it also check out both of their my-spaces, because Kayleah's mom seems happier than ever, new comments, new blogs, the whole package and none of them a bit sad (to her!) now I know better than any of you what a 12 year old girl would do in this situation because I am in fact 12, she would put up a fight and we were always taught to scream if a stranger were to do something out of the ordinary and her being in a well populated, safe area near her home someone would hear or see her because in able to get to the party she was supposedly going to she also had to cross the highway but to get back to my point she would be loud or be seen acting weird unless in fact she was very comfortable with her attacker, you know knew them on a personal level and who would a young girl trust better than her own mother? Now I live in Loveland and have been in this area many times before so I do know that yes this is a very populated area of Greeley, SOMEBODY would have seen this happening if it was someone she wasn't close to! Has her mother even been in for questioning at all anyway? Bet not stupid Colorado detective work!

i think there is a lot of speculation going on right now - the only confirming evidence that the mother was telling the truth about that last day's movements is the video of her by the mall - which doesn't match up with the story about walking to meet the friend for the birthday party. and she wasn't reported missing until late that night.

i don't know what to think at this point. but the body found was a murder victim - that much has been confirmed.

Person Found Dead In Ditch Ruled A Homicide
GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) ―

Investigators with the coroner's office in Greeley now say the body

Investigator Chris Robillard says dental records will be used to
identify the body. Robillard says the autopsy was completed late
Wednesday.

The body was found early Wednesday morning and there was immediate

GREELEY, Colo. -- CALL7
investigators have confirmed that the body found Greeley is that of
Kayleah
Wilson. They quoted law enforcement sources.Police have not confirmed
the report, but announced a 4 p.m. news conference to "release
information" on the case.Police
said earlier that they are investigating the case as a homicide but
haven't said if the person's death was the result of foul play or an
accident. Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said a media report that the body was
"killed" is inaccurate and that accidental death hasn't been ruled out.

An irrigation ditch employee, called a ditch rider, made the gruesome
discovery early Wednesday morning in the Greeley-Loveland Irrigation
Canal near a Greeley cemetery. It is a-half mile from the apartment
where Kayleah lives with her mom.Kayleah disappeared on March 28 while walking to a friend's birthday party. The
body was found at the bottom of a 30-foot spillway in the canal. A
co-worker of the man who discovered the body said it was that of a
young
woman, who was white, but police haven't confirmed that. The autopsy was
conducted at McKee Medical Center in nearby Loveland.Brenda
Jamison, one of Kayleah's grandmothers, confirmed the family had been
contacted by the Weld County Coroner on Wednesday but she would not say
what they were told.An autopsy would have told investigators if
the body was that of a male or female and if there were any obvious
signs of trauma, such as a penetrating wound, but investigators have
not released that information. They also haven't said if any clothing
or personal items were recovered from the body, which would aid in the
identification.Police are trying to determine where the body
first entered the canal. The area where the body was found had been
searched at least twice and the theory is that heavy rains flooded the
canal, dislodging the body from another point upstream. The canal
goes underground for some distance just upstream from where the body
was found. It is more than a mile west of where Wilson was last seen on
March 28.On Wednesday night, a large group of Kayleah's friends
and family gathered at the spot where the body was found and held a
candlelight vigil. The candles and mementos remained next to the canal
spillway on Thursday. http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/23621710/detail.html

Sources: Body Found Is Missing Girl Kayleah Wilson
GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) ―

KAYLEAH WILSON - 12 yo (2010) - Greeley CO - Page 2 Vigil
Greeley residents gathered at a vigil Monday night near the ditch where the body was found.
CBS4 Investigator Rick Sallinger has confirmed through sources that the
body found in a ditch is that of Kayleah Wilson. The 12-year-old
disappeared March 28.

Authorities didn't say Thursday how Kayleah was killed, but did say her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Investigator Chris Robillard said dental records will be used to
identify the body. Robillard said the autopsy was completed late
Wednesday. It's not confirmed how the body was identified as Kayleah.

How she died has not been released.

Kayleah's body was found early Wednesday morning. There was immediate
speculation that it could be that of Wilson, who who was last seen
March 28 while walking to a friend's house for a birthday party.

In her memory, classmates at Brentwood Middle Sch dotted the middle
school playground, where Kayleah was a student, with pink ribbons on
Wednesday. That's when the principal told them about the grim discovery.

"He kept the sixth grade after school and he told us that they found a
body. And this one girl started breaking out and crying. It's been two
months, I'm really scared for her. I hope she's okay," said Kayleah's
classmate Christian Shackley.

A crisis team was at the school again today.

Investigators don't know how long the body had been in that ditch. It
runs underground for about a mile, and crews had flushed the ditch with
water on Tuesday, the day before the body showed up. Investigators
believe it's possible someone was trying to hide the body in the ditch.

A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night near the ditch. Attendees prayed for the family of Kayleah.

Body Found Is Missing Girl Kayleah Wilson

GREELEY, Colo.
(CBS4) ―

Greeley Police have confirmed that the body
found in a ditch is that of Kayleah Wilson. The 12-year-old
disappeared March 28.

Police didn't say Thursday how Kayleah was killed, but did say her death
is a murder investigation.

Greeley
Police Chief Jerry Garner spoke at a news conference Thursday
afternoon and said investigators are still asking for public support
with information into Kayleah's murder.

"Her death occurred sometime ago, it didn't occur within a day or two of
the body being found," said Garner.

He also said there are a wide range of people of
interest that police will be following up on, but said there is
nothing to indicate there is a family member as a suspect in the
case.

Garner confirmed dental records were used to identify the
body. The autopsy was completed late Wednesday. How she died has not
been released.

Kayleah's body was found early Wednesday morning. There was immediate
speculation that it could be that of Wilson, who who was last seen March
28 while walking to a friend's house for a birthday party.

Garner met with Kayleah's mother, and said she is acting as any mom
would in that situation, she is upset. He tried to reassure her that
police would continue to make this case a priority.

"We don't give up on cases like this, we don't give up," said Garner.

In her memory, classmates at Brentwood Middle School dotted the middle school playground, where
Kayleah was a student, with pink ribbons on Wednesday. That's when
the principal told them about the grim discovery.

"He kept the
sixth grade after school and he told us that they found a body. And

A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night near the ditch. Attendees prayed for the family of
Kayleah.

The FBI continues to offer a $20,000 reward for the
arrest and conviction in Kayleah's murder.

People with information in the case are asked to call the Greeley Police Dept.
at 970.350.9600.
