An Indianapolis mother is locked up because detectives
say she locked up her own 11 year-old daughter in a bedroom in their
apartment while she was at work.
Officers say 39 year-old Samura Jenkins put a pad lock and a long dog
chain around the girl's ankle and chained her to the bed.
"It was long enough that she could get from where she was to the
restroom in the house," said Sgt. Linda Jackson of IMPD.
The girl had access to a phone. Police said she called a friend. The
friend wanted to hang out, but the girl said she couldn't because she
was chained up. That's when police say the friend told a parent, who
called police.
When help arrived, the 11 year-old threw the house key out of the window
so no one would damage the door. Neighbors said they had no clue about
what was going on inside.
"I really didn't know them all that well. They moved in about six months
ago. Saw the child outside playing, just spoke to her a couple of
times," said neighbor Gary Staver.
"That's taking it way too far. That's child abuse."
Investigators say Samura Jenkins is a single mom who just moved to
Indianapolis and doesn't have a support system here. However, police say
that's no excuse for what she did to her daughter inside their home.
