"Newborn" ZEORLIN - 2009 - Overland Park (S of KC) KS

A Johnson County judge Tuesday sentenced an Overland Park woman to
more than 10 years in prison for killing her newborn child.Alice
Zeorlin, 26, pleaded guilty in April to reckless second-degree murder
for killing the baby she delivered alone in the basement where she lived
in her parents’ home.She told no one about the pregnancy,
delivered the baby May 31, 2009, and put it in garbage bags in a
refrigerator. Her mother found the body the next day and called police.A
medical examiner determined that the baby was born alive and died from
asphyxiation, neglect or exposure to cold or some combination of those
factors.The case was one of at least three last year in which
women in Kansas hid pregnancies and killed their newborns. That
prompted the Kansas attorney general to call attention to a state law
that allows people to abandon infants in designated locations and not
face a penalty. All states have enacted versions of such “safe haven”
laws, but by late last year no baby had been surrendered in Kansas since
that state’s law took effect in 2007.
